I want to go to the Bahamas in the next year, but I'm scraping dimes together. Any advice to go cheap?

Depending on where you are flying from.. there are many cheap ways to vacation in the bahamas. Check Spirit airlines, Lynx, jetblue, USAIr etc.
Airport hubs are usually cheaper. NY, Phila, NJ, etc.

You can get low cost spring break style hotels like quality inn, Nassau Palms, El Greco, the Towne Hotel etc and eat McD's, Wendy's and local take out from Imperial Takeaway, located downtown.
Native breakfasts can be found for $2-3, lunch vendors near the hotels and downtown strawmarket sell huge plates of local food for under $10. Hearty Soups for $7 and mac and cheese for $1.
You can pick up a bottle of rum for $10.. and local beer 2/$5 at the liguor store.
The local jitney can be used for transportation during the daytime for just $1.

Do some research.. and you can have a fun beach vacation without going broke.

Off season is the best deals.. January - the middle of Feb, May - June 15, and late August - mid December (except Thanksgiving.

As for saving cash.. eat at home, no starbucks, walk instead of putting gas in the car, and don't buy that CD or top that you've been thinking about.

Liberty travel oftentimes has good deals.. Keep in mind that most packages don't include mandatory taxes, surcharges and gratuities. There's also a $22 airport charge pp.. to leave the bahamas..

Cheapest all-inclusive would be Paradise Island Harbour Resort. Check into it.

The truth my friend...y go when u know u cant spend much! Vacation's are supposed to be fun and able spend some! We work hard and play little...just wait till u have enough so u can enjoy your vacation...then go! P.s U need need a good amount of money to go the Bahamas!!

Book on Tuesday well in advance.
Try to find a timeshare viewing opportunity to pay for the room.
Connecting flights will save you a little.

Ooooooh. I've read all of the responses. You all are paying too much. Get a one time vacation package then you can travel anywhere for pennies on the dollar. If you are broke but love to travel, this will be your best route. Once yoou pay the one time fee, all of your other travels will be pennies on the dollar. You only pay whole sale instead of retail. Consider a cruise. You can find cruises that are 2-3 nights to the better deal 7 nights and more. Sometimes they are as little as 80 dollars per day per person and that includes Room, entertainment, and unbelievable meals all you can eat! You can chose the one that goes to the ports you like. I personally love St. Martin, Grand Caymen, and the Mexican ports. They are my favorite. There are ports I avoid. The cheapest times are September October and select times in November and December. When you book a cruise you know what the cost will be. It's paid for, you just need to set aside money to tip and that is the best deal on earth compared to the service you get. Then if you have extra money you can decide where to spend it.

Don't stay at the Islands Of the Bahamas resort... its expensive... I have stayed there. those little cartons of cereal cost 6 dollars!!!! The Bahamas is beautiful otherwise

my husband and i are going to paradise island in the Bahamas next week. it was 3000 just for the hotel and air. but we are staying at the Atlantis. i know airfare is pretty cheap. go to American airlines (aa.com) and just stay at a motel there. i think food and activities are pretty expensive so do what you can to save money on air and motel.

definitely shop around with travel places and book early the earlier you book the cheaper you can get.....normally you can get a decent vacation at a 4 or 5 star hotel all inclusive for 1000-1200 make sure you go al inclusive so that way all you have to pay for is your booze and souvenirs

My experience is very very old for you, but here goes:

In 1971, I wanted to return to Canada the cheapest way I could from Europe, so got a flight on Icelandic Airways from Luxembourg to the Bahamas The fare was $115 one way. ( I had to buy a $20 ongoing flight to Miami after that), and then flew to Toronto after that...

But I had no idea where to stay in the Bahamas but was lucky to meet a nice fellow who lived on a sailboat in some Marina....free stay for a week.....you might try to offer some local sailor(s) some money for a place to stay if that is your fancy...or there might be a hostel there...if I remember, prices are very high in the Bahamas for everything. If you can't get to Ft. Lauderdale cheaply you can go on discovery cruises. Tickets are around two hundred and includes meals. We don't have hostels but we have a people to people program where you can stay in Bahamian homes and have a host family take care of you. You can call the ministry of tourism here to find if thats at a cost to you, I think its free because its a gov. sponsored program. Also cheap hotels in GB start at about $100.00 a night which I guess may not be so cheap, but still cheaper than a lot of other options also look for booking deals on line a vacation packages, book well in advance. I would recommend saving so that you can have the best trip possible though. Some travel agents do payment plans and that way you can enjoy the trip with feeling the hard sudden pinch of the wallet.

The Bahamas are great. I try to go once a year. Last time I went there, I took a cruise down there from Carnival. You can also drive down to Ft. Lauderdale and take a Discovery cruise to the Bahamas from there, which is a great deal! You said you were tight on cash so I am thinking the Discovery cruise would be a way to go but you can also try winning a trip down there. To find trips to win, I just normally do a google search and type in Bahamas Sweepstakes (or something like that). The reason I mention this is that friends of mine actually have won a trip to the Bahamas before (which of course definitely saved some money). Well hope this information helped.
