To open a business in the DR without knowing someone is not a good a idea. you need to know people and get familiar with the area. The busiest TOURIST area Boca chica, Sosua, cabarete. (and right now business in boca chica area are kind of slow, i have personally experienced it) I guess you don't want to loose your money. I know Someone who selling a Italian Restaurant in Boca Chica. (this Restaurant it is well known for middle class it been business for about 12 yrs. and tourist it is in business street) anyway some people do bad in business others don't. because some do bad, don't necessarily means you are going to do. high season began in January through April. then again in the July and August too. September it is one of slower month or dead month of the yr for that type of business.
Every area in here it is visited by some tourist in specific in even others comes to. (like puerto plata most tourist there are German, Boca Chica Italian, Samana French, Bavaro and punta cana Americans even thou American are find every where..
Good Luck !!! if you decide to do business and welcome aboard... :-)

If you want to get rich quick, forget it. I owned 4 businesses over my 14 years here, 2 bars, a giftshop, and a small resteraunt. I ended up selling 3 of them to the 1st bidder, because the only lucrative market is with foriegners who not only come basically in the winter, and even in the best of scenarios, TOURISTS ARE 90+% all-inclusive! Why would they buy food or drink?!?
My best wishes to you:Cofresi,Costambar, Maimon...

I'm probably going to burst your balloon. For a start if you have no restaurant or Dominican experience forget it unless you want to lose your money. The tourist towns of Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete or Boca Chica have had hundreds of people with the same intention lose their investment in short order. You couldn't open a restaurant catering to Dominicans and make money, they support their own people not new arrivals, they also can't afford to pay tourist prices . The tourist season is from December to March more or less however Europeans are quite common in the summer and fall. That advice goes not only for the DR but pretty well everywhere in the Caribbean. It's one thing to vacation there but quite another to live and operate a successful business.

that's a tough one most resorts there are all-inclusive (for good reasons)and leaving them is highly discouraged! so check demographics and economics for the most inhabited area with disposable income . the busiest season for travel to the Caribbean is Jan.-April

I would say Puerto Plata-Sosua and Cabarete in that order for being the busiest besides all inclusives! Punta Cana is the absolute busiest but all inclusives only for the most part!

Advice that you got is correct that the restaurant is a difficult business but you can make money at it if you know what you are doing and find a nitch that is wanted!

It is also true that you need to spend some time to get to know the culture here a bit! Dominicans will all try to have their hands in your pockets all the time so you need to know your way around! Hell the gringos will also try to have their hands in your pockets as well:)

You will make money anywhere you open up a business in the DR if you do two things, make it cool and hip. Forget the tourist, these people are literally there today, gone tomorrow. If you are seeking to make good money down there you have to cater to Trendy Dominicans with money, there are allot more than you think, trust me. That's why all those people that opened and closed shop did so because they focused on the wrong market. For targeting this group you would be better of starting something in Santo Domingo, your investment will be higher but so will your returns. Starting a business is not just opening up a location and saying here I am, you have to focus on a group and this by far the target room to make money. the DR is has no place to go but up. Would Trump invest in a country with no sign of prosperity?

i must disagree with all of the other answers , I am dominican myself and i have seen business boom for all, over there. I would say stay out of tourist areas, They are usually all inclusive. I think that a good area would be " la capital " Open it near big market places like , la calle del conde, el bolivar , zona colonial and there are many new malls opening up. Don't open something that won't catch the eye of the domincans , think of it like this , people always like to do what the locals enjoy , so turists will ask natives for their suggestions. You want to get something domincan's will enjoy and not that expensive to eat .
