I was on the plane to Jamaica and.....?

I was on the plane to jamaica from the toronto airport, and about 20 minutes before we landed, the cabin crew came around spraying the aerosol stuff, it smelt really bad, they just said it was jamaican regulations for them to spray this and it was safe, but i want to know what it was and why they did it?

Thanks :)

The World Health Organization approves this spraying in occupied aircraft cabins in order to prevent crop-ruining insects from immigrating between countries. The procedure is called "disinsection"— i.e. killing insects.

It's the countries that require this spraying, so passengers get toxic showers on board. For example, the United Kingdom requires it on flights to London when leaving Kenya and India. Other countries where passengers get sprayed every flight prior to arrival are Argentina, Barbados, Dubai, Egypt, Grenada, India, Kenya, Kiribati, Madagascar, Mozambique, New Zealand, Nigeria, Panama, Trinidad, Senegal and South Africa.

I find it ironic (and highly unlikely) that a Jamaican authority would want to de-louse Canadian tourists before landing.

Must have been to ensure the safety of their vegetation from any bugs aboard the plane.

First I heard that. That is so absurd.

There are so many rumours about the most beautiful island in the world where great people, great food and great fun and beaches.

That flight should be checked out!!

I remembered many years ago they did the same thing from flights from NY but I have not seen it done recently.

It's a bug killer. I remember this practice starting years ago when California was having a horrible Meditteranian fruit fly infestation (Medfly). It was ruining fruit crops and spreading rapidly.

Medfly still comes and goes. It makes sense to try to avoid helping this and other pests spread. I'm not sure how effective spraying the cabin can be, though.

Sounds as though you were a smelly lot and you couldn't get in smelling like that. Only joking!

It was a DE-LOUSING SPRAY so you wouldn't import your buggies onto their island
