hello
we treat every one equally, what "wired t" has said about us not treating white men good IS A LIE, jamaicans are not racists!! teachers are needed in jamaica, and the students will have alot of respect for you. yes jamaica has poverty BUT incertain areas, just like any other country . go there and form your OWN OPINION of jamaica.
it is a wonderful place and normal ; so dont listen to some very ignorant people.

enjoy .
i am jamaican!♥

Secret
Let me touch on a few points

Jamaicans are racist and dont like white men
Not true.. we are very open minded and welcome foreigners... as long as they are not rude and cagey... see Jamaicans are very expressive and phsyicall... to a more subdued character they might seem over zealous or hostile... but its really just passionate.

We respect teachers
It depends on the level of education, school and community. Some communities have respectful people some do not... some schools are good schools with good reputations... some are not! More than likely you will have the best result at a tertiary level in terms of quality school and quality students.... at the secondry and primary level its all relative.

The pay is bad
In general it is.. but if u are a qualified teacher with experience and a masters or PHD then u have more options. A university salary is much better than most.... If your interested in working with children then a private or boarding school might pay a bit more than average.

I think the fact that u can teach both subjects makes u very marketable. contact the french embassy and the spanish embassy in jamaica... they will have good suggetions for you and they also teach classes.

places that offer teaching certification here are
shortwood teachers college http://www.stcoll.edu.jm/

and mico (i dont see there website)

main universities that may be hiring teachers are
uwimona and utech (google them)

Oh and this girls school (ST Andrew High School For Girls) was looking for french and spanish teachers recently... i saw an ad in the local news

All the best... Jamaica can be a great place to live... it has its negatives like everywhere else... but there are lots of positives too

Teachers in Jamaica i think do not the money that they deserve but their pay is not extremely bad. I'm sure we'll treat you witht the out most respect!

Doethineb
The pay is very low, which means that many Jamaican teachers to seek jobs on other Caribbean islands. It is impossible to generalise, as it would depend on what type of school you went to, but I think that teaching modern languages would be tough going. You could try a brief spell of volunteering while you decide. http://www.teaching-abroad.co.uk/destinations/jamaica.php

Ako sa mas?

Someone who is qualified to teach both Spanish and French and who is willing to teach in Jamaica is very welcome. You would be snatched up by some of our best schools. Dobre! Dobre!!

Having said that, the salary isn't much to write home about so if that's why you're thinking of coming here, I suggest you think again.

If you have taught before then you'll be familiar with the challenges and rewards that comes with the job. It's the same in Jamaica.

You'll get to hang out at the beach on your days off - a definite plus!!

Ciao!!

Jamaica is about as broke as a country can be. Your work will be rewarding because the people generally have a great respect for teachers. You won't have to be a babysitter/CPS agent like in the USA. Better love what you're doing because there is no money it.

NO, NO, NO
Jamaican aren't paid enough. The students are horrible, they will make you regret the day you enterd teacher's college. Many Jamaican teachers actually leave the island to work abroad.

Wired T
I went to Jamaica a year ago and it was a shock. It was shockingly beautiful and shockingly struck with poverty. Have you visited there before? You definately should if you havent already. It might be hard for you to survive there if you are white, theres a lot of hatred for white men in parts of Jamaica. Overall the people are AWESOME, you just have to be careful and everything will be Irie!
