Sorry they are incorrect. You do NOT need a passport, only a state ID. Puerto Rico & the US Virgin islands are US territories. Its no different than travelling to Hawaii. You will Not need a passport in 2008 either. Enjoy! |

No, you don't. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are U.S. territories. They're not foreign countries.
The following is copied from the U.S. State Department website:
U.S. Citizens traveling to and returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the U.S. territory and do not need to present a passport.
U.S. territories include:
American Samoa
Guam
Northern Mariana Islands
Puerto Rico
Swains Island
U.S. Virgin Islands |

Puerto Rico and St. Croix (US Virgin Islands) are both US territories, thus no passport is required for US citizens to travel on domestic flights to them.
However, for the Caribbean (regardless of island) I do recommend traveling with a passport, due to the large amount of international traffic in this region of the world, CBP and ICE both tend to play spot games with the public trying to find illegal immigrants- as unconstitutional as it is, you may need to prove you're a US citizen when asked or prepare for a hassle. |

No because PR and St. Croix are US territories, but you can bring it and use it as a ID. |

Might not need one to leave, but you'll need one to get back into the US |

Yes you do. As of January 1st of this year, if you leave the country by air or by boat you need a passport. If you don't have one, go to the U.S. State Department website. They have the forms you need to fill out, instructions on where to turn them in (usually your local post office), and lists of locations where you can get passport photos.
