I also agree that you need to make time for Old San Juan. Plan on spending 2-3 days in that area. There are two old forts: El Morro and San Cristobal. Another great idea is the walking path that is just outside the gates to the city of Old San Juan. It meanders around the bay area. Very pretty walk at sunset! The evenings in Old San Juan are very safe for walking around and visiting the outdoor kiosk bars.

Also in Puerto Rico take a day trip to El Yunque rain forest. While there you can take a walking tour. It is a very surreal experience.

If you enjoy gambling there are several casinos on the island. The beaches are beautiful throughout the island. Have a great time!

If you get chance try to rent a car, that way you can see the sights on your terms and not on a set time frame with a group tour. Most people will know English, especially in the tourist areas, but trying your hand at speaking Spanish looks good.

If you do rent a car just bear in mind that driving is a little crazy, just keep your eyes on all your mirrors and you'll be fine.

Places to Stay.
Really depends on your budget, if you want to take a chance, try priceline.com (you can specify the star of the hotel and make a bid on the nightly rate). Or check out expedia or travelocity.

Places to see.
Old San Juan - easily spend a few hours walking around here. It's a little hilly so maybe jump on the free trolley bus to El Morro (the fort) and work your way back down through the city. Plenty of places to eat and drink for all budgets. Try Breakfast at La Bombonera (one of the oldest establishments in the city)

El Yunque (rainforest) plus spend the afternoon at Luquillo Beach

Check out one of the grand hotels on a weekend evening and try your hand (feet) at some latin dancing.

Ponce on the South coast and further along the coast to the west San German for more Puerto Rican architecture. San German has one of the earliest churches on the island.

Arecibo Observatory. The James Bond movie Golden Eye and also the Jodie Foster movie Contact were filmed there.

If you are coming soon (before end of March) you can head over to Rincon (on West coast) and try to cath the migration of the Humpback Whale. You are supposed to get good views from the Rincon Lighthouse and I'm sure local sailors will offer something.

There is also this: Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve (Tel:787-722-5882). I have not been, but I would like to (it sounds a cool place to visit). You can have an escorted tour through the reserve on an electric trolley, but you have to book in advance.

There is plenty to do here. You might even want to consider a side trip to Vieques or Culebra (as I've heard the beaches are amazing, but off the main roads)

Try the local food stands and just enjoy everything that the island has to offer.

Food wise, everything you can imagine. In condado area for seafood try Miro's (was there the other day and it was superb). In Old San Juan try The Parrot Club for Caribbean style or Tantra's for Indian cuisine

Note the island is not that big, so you can get from one side to the other in about 3 hours, so it's possible to stay in say San Juan and see a lot of the island. Or, stay a fews days in different locations.

I just moved to PR from Ohio and think that you should definately go inside the island more. My best friend came to visit us and they really enjoyed the Cavernas de Camuy and there is also a bi bay on the island where you can go kayaking at night and see the sea light up. Most tourist attractions are bilingual. check out this website when planning...gotopuertorico.com. Good luck

I would say go to :

El Morro, they have the forts and all the old Spanish dungeons and all that, it's cool.

Also the rainforest, El Yunque.

Cuevas de Camuy (Camuy Caves),

PiÃ±ones y Loiza Aldea-- For the food kiosks, I recommend the Empanadillas the Jueyes (crab fritters I suppose) and Afro Caribbean culture (music, bomba y plena).

BaÃ±os de Coamo I believe it's a river, went there a lot when I was a kid.

La BahÃa Fosforecente-- It's in the south, the water glows at night, it's a beach. I believe it's due to some microorganisms there found in few parts of the world.

Parque ceremonial tibes- it's the cermonial indian park. It's in the south as well, in Ponce I believe.

Aguadilla-for the amazing beach. It's all the way in west.

If you're going in March be sure that it's no in the Semana Santa week, it's like Holy week, and everythign is closed, also they would expect you not to get in the water at the beach they say its bad luck.

You definately have to just wander around Old San Juan ! I was there and even late at night I felt nice and safe. El Morro Fortress is also very impressive ! Enjoy the charms and pleasures of the simple life in Old San Juan though

There are many. If you stay in San Juan there are attractions but not many. Try going to other places other than San Juan. The Carribean Rainforest, El Yunque is great. If you get a chance, go to Vieques and visit the Bioluminescent Bay. Fajardo is pretty, but the water is really sandy now. Crashboat in Aquadilla is absolutely beautiful. If you are certified, diving around the offshore island of Desecheo is great too. You can't go on the island because it's protected, but you can get a charter boat to get you really close.
