There are so many things to do in Jamaica!!and they are not miles away as the island isnt huge. When you get to your resort ask about the local attractions. Also do not be afraid to leave your complex if you are staying in a resort as people get to see the real jamaica if they step out of where they are staying. You must go to dunn river falls its amazing!!Try to go and see a plantation house, the history is really interesting on the island. For shopping get a taxi to ochio rios its a big culture shock but worth a visit.Take a guided boat tour they are really informative and tell you about where on the island you actaully are and about the coral, fish etc.
If you like your reggae, try to get to see some of bob marleys history at nine mile. The thing ive found about Jamaica is not to be scared to go out and explore.Rather than using the organised trips that cost alot,go just outside your resort and you will find local taxi drivers who are alot cheaper and they will take you to where you want to go and wait for you,get them their lunch and a drink and use them again!!They will spend the day with you and show you things that a normal trip wouldn't.Jamaican people are so friendly and are willing to show you where to go.
I got married there and had to go back again!!ive fallen in love with it!!People remember you and show such affection when you return.
The key thing is not to get sucked into all the trips that cost alot of money, when you can do it alot cheaper by just venturing out a bit!! |

Being in Negril, you'll be in one of the most beautiful places in Jamaica, possible even the world. Just relax on the beach and enjoy the sun, sea and sand. Go jet skeeing, cliff diving, snorkeling, go to a bar and drink some Jamaican made drinks, go to ATI one of the biggest events in Jamaica yearly. |

Don't over plan... wait until you get there, there will be plenty of information around about places to see.
When I went to the Caribbean we made the mistake of trying to do TOO much, we didn't go to the beach until the last day there... now when we look back we would have not done the "shore excursions" that were optional with the cruise, and would have only gone to a couple attractions. Instead we would have taken more days to visit the different beaches around the island.
Rent or buy a mask, snorkel and flippers and enjoy what makes the Caribbean special. |

Rick's Cafe is one of the top ten bars in the world and only about 20 -25 minutes away from Negril. The cliff divers are awesome - well worth a visit.
Mayfield Falls is supposed to be a good day out but apparently a long hike. |

Negril is very laid back and the shore is beautiful. Take time to enjoy the beach, especially if you are staying on a resort with beach front. It is a wonderful way to spend the day, relaxing on the beach, swimming in the warm water and listening to the music. At point village there is an outfit that can take you snorkeling over the coral reef for $20/hour. Horseback riding at Rhodes Hall Plantation is another option. At the end of the 90 min ride, you can go into the surf and swim the horses. Definitely eat from the local not tourist restaurants. MiYard has good food. Choices restaurant on West End Road across from SamSara Resort serves a good "Jamaican style" breakfast for about $350 JD - ackee, saltfish, callalou, dumpling, the works! Go to Rick's Cafe for drinks and the cliff diving. Nice place to hang out and chill but not my idea of a great dinner place - food is Americanized. Try Kuyaba restaurant next to Legends Resort on the 7 mile beach. Upscale, wonderful service, great location/views and good food. Dinner for 2 aprox $45 USD and well worth it! Another "local" restaurant is Juicy J's in the heart of Negril - dinner for 2 about $20 and tasty. It is set back from the main road, behind shopping area and about 1 block in. When you see the Burger King, go across the street and walk up into the neighborhood. Ask anyone, they should be able to direct you. A good place to change US to Jamaican dollars is Cool Vibes Duty Free Shop. It is located in the Sunshine (?) Village Marketplace (near Key West Pharmacy) on West End Road. You will get a slightly higher rate than the bank and certainly better than at the hotel. Hotels give about 60J to 1 US -- there you will get the going rate, about 67J to 1 US. It adds up after a while. Alfreds Ocean Palace - a grand name for a simple beach bar - has live music and dancing in the sand with a cover charge of $200 - 300 JD (aprox 3-5 USD) is OK. Up the road is The Jungle - they have theme parties (dress in All White, Old Clothes, etc) that sometimes offer a discount for admission - otherwise expect to pay about $700 JD cover. We didn't get to go in that night but it appears to be a popular spot. The music was going strong... Most of all, just enjoy your time in Jamaica. The people are basically warm & friendly. Your hotel staff should be quite helpful - even the housekeeping staff can make good recommendations of where to go. Don't be afraid to walk about and meet the people - just use common sense as you should anywhere. |

Go there every year and love it dearly!
Dunn's River Falls
Ricks Cafe
Appleton Rum Plantation
My favorite- hop in a taxi and have them take care of you for a guided tour through the "real" Jamaica- the small towns like Sav-La-Mar, and throughout the Westmoreland parish.
There are two "malls" in Negril, drive towards downtown, make a right at the traffic circle (the only traffic circle in the main part of town), it is near the Hi-Lo grocery store. They have several touristy shops as well as a local craft market. There is also an expensive, upscale shopping center called Times Square, which is right on Norman Manley Blvd (the main thoroughfare in town). There is also a craft market right before you get to the traffic circle (before you cross the bridge of the Negril River), which is strictly local artisans, but they usually do not open up till 11 or 12.
A really good place to eat is Kuyaba.
You are going to Negril at a very hot time of year. Best to nap during the hot hours and do your shopping/adventures in the early morning or late evening. It will storm everyday. Also, the tourist season slows down that time and the locals are hungry for business (fair warning).
Hope you have a safe trip! I'll be happy to help out in any way. I usually go for 3 weeks at a time at the CoCo La Palm resort. |
