A maid is making $140 Dollars a month. Food & drinks are not cheaper than in the US. They all need to make a living, so don't think that they are very happy about books & bubbles.

When I went we left tips for the maid in dollars but also left small toys for the children of the maid as they really appreciate this esp if things they cant get hold of very easily - baseball cards go down really well.... but make sure you leave a proper tip too!

Well people ......it just depends what part of Dominican Republic you go to because i went there for a month and if you go to the rich side or poor side the maids would prob laugh at you come on coloring books thats nuts if its money or clothes then thats a diff story....

Happy Feet
This not in 4/5 stars hotels! there your tip must be in cash..

my brother in law and his girlfriend gave the maid cash and candy everyday. they had desert and warm towels and special stuff for left for them all from the maid. i was there with my hubby and we just gave the maid money and no special treatment for us :(

Woof ?
I agree with Mr. Zwink

We went to the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) last summer and had a great time. We left the maids school supplies and a couple of bucks each day. I would suggest pre-writing simple requests for the maid and leaving the little note with the tip each day. Our All inclusive only gave 2 Presidente beers a day and the rest in the fridge was a brand I didn't like. After 2 days of good tipping and a note that said "más cerveza por favor - Presidente" (more beer please - Presidente) The fridge was over flowing with Presidente. They appreciate anything you give them, are the nicest people you would ever want to meet and are hard working) Believe it or not, my Girlfriend left a couple of bucks and a box of tampex one day, and the maid came back later and thanked her like 10 times (amazing).

Other 'Tips' (pun intended) 1) Always tip the pool bartenders a buck or two each morning. they WILL remember you, what you drink and hand yours over the heads of anyone who has been waiting 2) Never Ever Ever Tip someone in front of there 'manager'. These people will be easy to spot and if they see you tip they will take half or the entire tip away from the person and keep it there self. I learned the hard way. 3) Set a tip budget. We put aside 10-15 dollars a day, which is 100 bucks for the week but they appreciate it, and will treat you like a rock star. The last day of our trip the bartender pulled out a new bottle of Dom Perignon and was making mimosas’ for my GF. and we were NOT staying at a 5 star hotel - have fun

a large portion of the dominican republic is very very poor. any gifts would make them happy, and treat you well. most poor people seem to greatly apreciate hygene products (soaps toothpaste etc) especially if te soap is parfumed.

if colouring books are rare i could imagine that this would make them happy aswell.

and ofcourse, a happy maid is a good maid.
