In Jamaica I have never seen a sandwich/baguette store why? Would people like a change from patties or chicken

Trying to find out why when it comes to lunchtime you only have the option of patties or a full cooked dinner. Given the choice would you like a sandwich or salad with some freshly squeezed juice. I imagine this choice is widely avaiable in Kingston, but I have not found this anywhere else on the north coast. I am considering going into this line of business.

You have subway stores in Jamaica and most gas stations sell sandwiches. I guess the market is there for full meals and patties and not so much for sandwiches and baguettes. |

I don't kow..it could be good because jamaicans go thru phases! We are obsessed with something for months and then we need something new (but we always go back to the original!) It could be good in CERTAIN AREAS..perhaps an area closer to tourists or even kingston I guess! You just have to study the surroundings and see what people like. Some areas are not as open-minded to it as others. I mean, it will be hard to substitute PATTIES cuz they taste great, there on-the go, and there kind of healthy.. You're sandwhiches would have to be exceptionally well, with affordable pricing..and belly-filling becaues if not, the people will think, "I can make this sandwhich at home!" But I think SALADS would be great..EXCEPTIONALLY great salads. if you can make salad taste great..it will be a hit cuz salad competes on it own. If your salad is good, it will sell. They will say, "It's healthy and it taste good"..Perfect...b/cuz we would expect salad to taste bad! And we've just killed two birds with ones stone. Also we would expect to pay a little more for a salad than a patty! Sandwich competing with PATTY..yould have to do an experiment b4 actually creating a sandwhich place. Give people samples of sandwhich, and ask if they would have it as an everyday meal! The juice would probably be a HIT too..if you're juice TASTE GREAT! If you can create great fresh juice along with the salad/sandwhich place..you would probably have some great business! it's all about the culture..and some don't find things as appealing as others..so you would have to see about Jamaica's culture.. Subways has been around probably as long as KFC..and KFC is STILL packed to the brim while subway is still seen as some other food place (at least to me anyway!) And NO don't bring Hispanic food into Jamaica like MO said(sorry MO..still luv you!!) ..it's good.. but Jamaicans will take there local cuisine over hispanic food anyday! It would be a bad business move. Taco bell had a chain store over here..it's not here anymore..hint hint! Jamaicans prefer there own spices more so than Hispanics! So do tourists. And the local cuisine is so good that most foreigner don't want anything else other than the Jamaican cuisine..salads and sandwhiches will not deviate from the culture so it will not be as bad as trying to replace the local cuisine with someone else's foods. I don't know about the rest of the jamaican crew, but I would be really upset if local cuisine got replaced! |

There are sandwiches available. I bought a nice sandwich in Negril at the shop next to the Hi-Lo market. There are other options as well. Go for it anyway! You know what I haven't seen alot of throughout the country........Mexican foods! Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, sopes, taquitos, ect...that may be a good option! |

Its Very Hot In Jamaica |
Goddes makes a number of valid points as do some of the other sanswerers. The bottom line is sandwiches and salads arent a major part of our culture. I liked Taco Bell and sometimes wish it were still here but Mexican food isnt to our liking at all. We have no solely Mexican restaurant in Jamaica (correct me if im mistaken). I love me some Subway but maybe once every five years the prices are ridiculous, i can get a small pizza or a Rotisserie chicken for the price of a sub sandwich! Patty is cheap and quick to make not to mention the different forms they have now- chicken Mega lobster shrimp etc. So its easy to see the appeal there. |

As long as you are in a touristy area you should be fine. Jamaicans generally like their cooked meals. The tourists on the other hand may be wary of trying so many foreign foods, and may embrace the sandwiches which may be more familiar to them. Go for it. Do both sandwiches and salads. You know some people watching their figures. |

Jamaicans like hot cooked food but if you want, you could put some curried goat in one of your fancy baguettes and wait to see for yourself. I'm a bit of a Francophile myself, so I would try your sandwich at least once. Traditionally, Jamaicans really don't like cold foods and that is why sandwiches are not that popular. The tourists, however, would probably appreciate your idea. |
