It is'nt limited to your gf. It is indeed like a female version of "dude" used for emphasis. like "My girrrrrl, you would'nt believe what happened to me today!" It doesn't actually mean that the person is your 'girl' like gf.

My girl is used generally, just like some people preface a sentence with "dude" so is "my girl". It's usually used when you're trying to get across a point though so I wouldn't advise you to go around greeting everyone that way. Hope i was helpful.
