Vianda is the group, like potatoes, yuca, etc. Batata is sweet potatoes.

shinningstarofthecarribean
Beanda maybe is the phonetic for Vianda...Viandas are all types of verduras in Puerto Rico...like Yams, malanga, yuca etc...

batata = sweet yams

No they don´t. Batata is ´potato´.

It is vianda to help correct your spelling which are all vegetables that grow under ground. They are:
batata-our sweet potato which is like the yam, but white
yuca-hard to peel, but so delicious
malanga-round, easy to peal and there is lila or purple malanga(white with purple like streaks in it) and the white malanga-they are soft when cooked and are so good to eat
yautia-small, you have to peel them as you do the batata and boil them whole because they are small
These are just a few of the viandas here. They are just like potatos, a vegetable that grows under ground, is peeled and boiled to cook. From the yuca you can make casave which is grounded for bread. I love yuca chips. Peel the yuca, slice it thin and fry like potatos.

beanda? You mean "vianda"?
Batata is just one kind of vianda.

Vianda is a generic word to refer to foods that grow under the ground like batata (sweet potato), yautia (yams?), yuca (casawa), ñame, malanga, papa (potatoe) and many more. Some people call the calabaza (pumpkin) also a vianda although it grows over the ground.

There are more than one kind of batata, the batata mameya is sweet, the batata blanca (white) is not as sweet as the other variety.
