Is $400.00 US dollars alot in Jamaica?

I got married and my husband has a daughter that resides in Jamaica. She is a littel girl, We send $400.00 monthly to support his daughter. She lives in a board house. Is that enough money to support her basic needs and extra things she may need? I just want to make sure we are not sending too much and that her mother is utilizing the money wisely. I love my daughter by marrriage very much and want her to be able to expierence some things she may not been able to have before, and at the same time, know i am not taking care of everyone in the house.

400 U.S. is alot of money in Jamaica..hiss teeth...that is more than enough per month, and your daughter shouldnt want for anything. You have to watch people in Jamaica sometimes (and i hate to say it)..even your own family will try and con you out of your money, and make it seem like they are starving, when they probably have more than you! Trust me, i had to learn the hard way to just say no, or send what I have....but for a little girl, that is alot of money though...

That is only sufficient for her if she doesn't have to travel anywhere far and if she is younger than a teenager (meaning not attending high school). I believe you love your STEP daughter but you have to understand that even if you should lessen the support the family there would still find a way to stretch the money so that it helps out other people in the household. You say they live in a board house so I assume that they are somewhat poor. You must realize that while some families are unreasonable you can't lessen the money that is already not so much out of fear that it will not be appropriately spent.

As a woman if you had two children for two separate men would you not want to do the same for both? What if one man took care of his child but the other didn't? Would you take better care of the child that had support and neglect the one that didn't?

That's more than enough ! I doubt a little girl would need any more than that. So don't worry that amount is fine. It's sad to say but some families will try to rip you off and try and make you send more , they'll act like there suffering in Jamaica but they can get by they just want more and more money from you. So don't be too generous. The $400 U.S. should do.

By the way,

400.00 USD = 30,656.00 JMD

Thats about right. I was in Jamaica for 7 days earlier this year and believe me things are VERY expensive. In comparison, things cost the about the same as they do here. Its about 60 Dollars to every 1 JA, so your 400$ is equivalant to about 35,000.JA but considering my husband and I went to the supermarket and just bought some snacks and drinks for our room and spent 900 JA well that should tell you how fast the money goes.

The fact that your step daughter lives in a board house does not mean she lives on government owned land and not have basic amenities such as running water and electricity. It may mean, however, she lives in a rural area.

As to the amount of USD400 per month, it should be enough to take care of her needs on a monthly basis. You should caution your husband however to try to save some funds in the US for her. Jamaica is terribly expensive and $400 can go really quickly especially if there is some emergency.

Money goes quickly in Jamaica it is enough to take care of a child because there are people who aren't earning half of that and support their families. I wouldn't say its a lot of money but that child should not want for anything. For food and clothes its ample and the exchange rate is around $73 to US$1 at the moment. Don't send a penny more than that.

stingjam
That is more money than MOST people who live in board houses make in a month. You are basically paying your daughter a 'junior salary'. The average entry level job for someone with no degree is about $30k to $40k per month. US$400 is about $33,000 which is smack in the middle of that range.

My curiosity has force me to ask, who is sending the money, you or the child's father? Are you just checking to see if the child is getting too much? Do do you think there would be peace in that "board house" if the child in question was well fed and properly dressed and her brother or sister wasn't? Please tell me, because it's your money, how should a loving mother with 2 or 3 children spend it, should she feed the one and stave the others? Please remember, she is the mother of the child, she too deserves something from the child's father. Where is your feminine compassion.
All the above posters are just looking at the money no one is looking for the child's or her mom's interest. Who knows what hell she's and the father been through before?
Bet you are planning to file for that child so that the out flow of money will stop.
I've noticed you have said that you love "the daughter by marriage" how conveniently said.
Sound juss like de I.M.F.

the exchange rate is 76.50 jamaican to 1 us dollar
it would be 400x76.50!!so the answer would be $30600 jamaican

US$400 per month, is 100 per week....minimum wage is 50 per week.

The board house you describe may mean they are on government land, hence no rent to pay, so probably no running water either & maybe no power...or if there is power, a simple light run from a neighbor. So the bills amount to food, clothes, phone cards, and taxi fare...assuming the girl is in school, tuition & lunch money.

I think 400 is quite enough since the mother most likely does something to earm money in addition to what you send.

I know Jamaica is expensive. My aunt used to go for vacation but, it got to be too much. I found some threads about it.........
Money goes quick in Jamaica quicker than you realize when your at home. Seems like everything you do requires money. I learned to live basic and chill alot.......................................
ive been living here on 100 pounds a month ($14000) Ja - with a little hustling in between lol. Its possible but you have to be very careful. My rent is $9000 per month - the rest goes on noodle soups, bread, eggs and 1 litre bottle of vodka for less than $400 Ja, phone cards, hair dye lol. i dont get taxis, I walk, I take a peanut butter sandwich and a bottle of water to the beach.
..... BTW 400$ is 256 pounds. So that's about 35000 ja
