Is Jamaica dangerous?

Im going to Jamaica in December with my family of 4. We are staying in Negril and venturing out daily. We want to visit all the towns like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and MAYBE Kingston since I've heard Kingston is dangerous. We rented a car so we could do it at our own pace. But I've been hearing so much about how its dangerous there. Can someone who has been there fill me in on the truth.

Ok...my mom and older bro are from Jamaica so we go ther an average of 4 times a year. To tell you the truth, Jamaica is like everywhere else; there's crime, murder, kidnappings, etc. It's not like it's 5 times more dangerous than anywhere else..i mean, listen to all the cruel things that happen in America. Jamaica is seen as a peaceful paradise, but actually over the past few years, the crime rate has gone up, like it has everywhee else. So my advice? Don't make it seem as if your lives are at stake every corner you turn. Just be cautious and familiar with your surroundings (especially since you're tourists.) Have Fun When You Go!!!!! <best answer>

1. GIve Tianna S. best answer.

2. Kingston is WAY too far to go to from negril as part of a daily excursion. i recommend booking a hotel for one night in port antonio, to avoid trying to drive to and from negril in one day.

3. Kingston is too functional and complicated. traffic. easy to get lost in the maze. Its not the crime that worries me... complexity in the middle of your beautiful vacation worries me.

Overall, i recommend Kingston only for people who need to do business or people interested in the Bob Marley tours, and possibly those who want to get some intense nightlife. Its much more comfortable touring kingston with a guide (whether you are looking for daytime tours or nightlife). Again, crime is NOT the major problem. Complexity of Kingston is the problem.

How is kingston scary?

Its not more dangerous than anywhere else. there is crime and violence everywhere you go its just that Jamaica is a small country so it seems more higher. But i wouldn't worry about that Kingston is a very busy and complicated place so i would suggest that you go to Kingston with a tour guide you would be better off.

uptowngirl
Not more crime than anywhere else in the world. Jamaica is a small country so crime just seems more concentrated.

yes tianna s. hit it thoroughly. i've been 3 times and don't recommend going to kingston. it IS scary!! there's plenty of other stuff to do in montego bay, ocho rios and negril...so much! have fun!

There is nothing wrong with Kingston, yes in some parts there are ghettos but if you stay uptown you will be perfectly safe. Actually Jamaicans don't hurt tourists. Most of the crime here is because of drugs or reprisal.
