Is Jamaican a good vacation destination?

How is the beach, activities, and nightlife? Also how safe is it? I have heard that it isn’t very safe to travel outside of your resort.. thanks!

Barcovago is talking out of his butt. I have been to other caribbean islands and they are good, don't get me wrong, but they can't beat Jamaica to me. All of the islands have the same quality of beaches so if you are going only for the beaches you can go anywhere.

But Jamaica being bigger than the other islands (Cuba and Dominica Republic excluded and Trinidad just a little bit smaller) have other excursions and activities that are not available in the smaller countries. E.g., waterfalls, quad biking, river rafting and so on. You have Kool Runnings Water Park in Negril, Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, etc.

In regards to safety: I grew up in Jamaica and I abhor the resort-lead excursions so last year when I went with around eight friends we hired a minibus and I drove around the island for two weeks going to different places including areas that most tourists don't know about (the great south coast). We were out every night on our own and we had no hassle at all (except for a few bums asking for money).

Being half-Jamaican and half-South African I also get really upset when people say the same kind of garbage about South Africa and although it can be violent in Jo'burg and a few other places it's cool if you know what you're doing. I love both countries and I love driving all over both countries.

If you believe people like barcovago you'd think that it was Rwanda during the genocide. I'm not saying that Jamaica hasn't got a crime issue but in the last ten years, I've known of only two foreigners killed (one by a prostitute and the other was living as a local) which is a far better rate than being a tourist in London (the greatest city on earth and the city of my birth).

No dis to the other Caribbean countries (I love Trinidad and Tobago) but pound for pound there is no better English speaking Caribbean island for me.

Even where you live isn't safe (at least not 100% safe.) no matter where you go there will be a possibility of not being safe. However I think you should go to Jamaica! The beaches look beautiful, you'll meet a lot of great people. I say go for it! I would if I had the chance.

AWESOME!!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT

Yes, Yes, an excellent vacation destination.

If I had a cake and said it taste good, and you want a piece, that would have no relevants; but if you taste it then you will no how delicious the cake is.

Come on down to Jamaica and you will see, words cannot express the beauty and its resort areas. Christopher Columbus when discovered Jamaica said it is the most beautiful place in the world, of wood and water then. Today, most of the wood is out, because beautiful constructed 5 star hotels rated the best in the world.

JAMAICA GRANDE, SANDALS, HEDONISM II, and hundredths of beach resorts. Even in New Kingston we boast the towered Hilton hotel and the adjacent tower also the Pegasus, and Courtleigh.

Yes, Jamaica is the country of good vacation.

LOOK AT THIS: JAH - GOD MAICA - MADE THE SPECIAL LAND, thus JAMAICA, the isle of beauty, 144 square miles of lush vegetation, indigeneous food galore and beauty spots.

For a most tranquil setting, we have the Hope Botanical Gardens with a zoo and Devon House (that is Kingston), then Ocho Rios - the pride of the country and Negril the gold of the country. We have Portland too rafting on the Rio Grande, and many other Yahoo Answers would not have the memory to allow me to describe Jamaica's pearl of the Caribbean.

JAMAICA, NO PROBLEM MAAAAAN!!!

I got married there in 2001.
it's safe if you use common sense - I'd be more afraid in any large american city for my safety actually.
beaches are great. not sure about nightlife (my son was too young to leave with a babysitter so we didn't have any nightlife outside of the all inclusive resort)
They do drive on the 'other' side of the road there - so get used to taxis and shuttle buses unless you're one of the brave.
smoking ganja there is also illegal although widely tolerated.
avoid spring break time where lots of college students are making their first alcohol experiences (being woken up at 10:00 am by kids dry-heaving in the bushes is not a great thing for all involved).
be prepared for lots of heat and humidity, bring lots of sunscreen.
but I can recommend it. except maybe for asthma sufferers and chronic sinusitis sufferers.

Jamiaca is amazing, the beaches are just gorgeous, best beaches iv ever seen and iv been to a few places. Its not the safes place no, but aslong as your in a 'bigish' group and not on your own because they can pick on the tourists and vonruable very easily but only sometimes.

I would deff recommend going there, night life is great just be extra carefull, people may try and sell you drugs in clubs etc.

all depends of where abouts you go really, when i went we stayed in a top 5 star luxuary hotel and i didnt have any problems ( we also had a bodyguard for me and my sister lol so i surpose i got it easy) but yea its really beautiful!!

Hope this helped!!!

Jamaica is a great destination! The beach in Negril is known the world over for its quality. Seven miles of white sand groomed daily.

The nightlife definitely abounds. Lots of reggae shows, clubs, local bars, etc. The parties go late into the night and early morning. The rum flows like water.

Safety is relative. You have to have your wits about you anytime you leave the country. Would you leave money on a bar unattended where you live? Would you leave your doors unlocked? Would you wear flashy jewelry in a bad part of your city? You just have to take normal precautions. I've never had anything happen to me in Jamaica, and i've been going for almost 15 years.

It was an awesome vacation. I was never away before and it was great. Don't worry about the safety. Have someone from your hotel or resort help you out. Our vacation package and hotel offered someone to help us set stuff up. He made sure we had a ride to and from each destination. My sister and I even went shopping without the guys. It was great. We stayed at the Riu Tropical Bay in Negril. The resort had all kinds of activities throughtout the day besides the fact that all food and beverages were included and a stocked bar in the room. My sister had such a great time she going again this fall. Have a great time. Everyone is very nice and the beaches are beautiful.

Personally, I have absolutely no use for Jamaica.. the crime, street gangs and drugs are just not to my liking... when you throw in a bunch of hot hormone types from the U.S. doing their underage drinking and drugs... you couldn't PAY ME to go to Jamaica.

Generally, the people who write rave reviews of Jamaica and think it's so great, have NEVER BEEN to any of the REALLY NICE Caribbean islands... if, in fact.. they have ever even BEEN to any other island in the Caribbean... so they have no point of reference.

it kinda ghetto i went to montego bay we went to margaritaville which was a lot of fun but the street where they have a lot of shops was ghetto. you see people asking for money and the shop owners try to get you to come in there shops.
