Race-No |

Jamaican is a nationality, not a race. The difference is the NATION where a person is from versus the COLOR of their skin. If her mom is black and her dad is black from Jamaica, she's black, not mixed. |

Jamaican is not a race. It is a nationality. Saying he's Jamaican is the same as saying I'm American. |

No - Jamaican is a nationality but some people misuse it as a race.
Unless you yourself immigrated from Africa you are not African-American... you're just American.
If you friend immigrated here form Jamaica she's Jamaican-American. If she was born here she's just American.
Trying to make any more distinction than that is being racist no matter what color your skin is. |

JAMAICAN is not a race.
Jamaican is the name used to refer to individuals who are citizens of the island of Jamaica.
The island is populated by persons from different ethnic backgrounds. , Africans, English, Spanish, Germans, East Indians and Chinese are just some of the groups that have settled on the island. Therefore, your friends father may be from any of these races and still be Jamaican.
As the island's motto states "Out of Many, One People" The island boasts a cornucopia of cultures, which makes it one of the most diverse islands in the Caribbean. |

OMG!!! I just have to say how shocked and appalled I am at some of the ignorant answers given.
Jamaicans are citizens of Jamaica; therefore Jamaican is a nationality and have absolutely nothing to do with race, which is a contrived idea designed to divide and conquer the masses.
The fact that you, your friend and soooo many of those who responded to your question are sooooo confused shows how difficult it is to change some of the brainwashing that took place in our society centuries ago.
Jamaicans are Americans because we are a part of Central America. This is similar to Germans or the French being Europeans and Chinese and Japanese being Asians.
Tell you friend the color of her skin is IRRELEVANT; it's a purely superficial distinction that serves absolutely no purpose. |

Wdr... Look. To answer your question: Yes, Jamaican is a race. Granted, it is ALSO a nationality. The term "Black" simply covers a plethora of races. As Lala explained, you can be born from Jamaica and be say...... Chinese. A person isn't automatically Black if (s)he is Jamaican. And also a Black American is not automatically African.
If your friend's parents are not both Jamaican, then she's mixed. |

jamaica is a country- so they have their own nationality
as for race
ive heard that if you call the 'african-americans' which is our generic term for black people- they get offended
which makes sense
one time this girl in my social studies class classified black british people with the term 'african american' and i was like wow we use that term far too generically
i think they are classified as some kind of afro-carribbean.
i dont know though- just dont call them african american- especially if they're not american
and yeah jamaicas not in africa |

To be Jamaican is a nationality, not a race. Black is the race or African which ever you prefer. Your question is contradictory. Your friend is Black however she automatically is Jamaican since her father is Jamaican, meaning she can legally be a citizen of Jamaica without much hassle. To be politically correct, She would be termed as a Jamaican-American (Jamerican) of a African descent. |

No JAMAICAN is not race, we are a proud and forceful nation, our skin tones varied from ebony to ivory and every shade between, and believe it or not, they were Ashanti slaves that were brought to America that were so rebellious that they were sent to Jamaica. Some of their sons and daughters are our national heros and heroine.

if born in US...a us citizen. period,.////and also jamaica is a part of north america...so you can still say afro-american
but it is the black race...if you think in terms of race as conventially defined..
many beleive race does not exist/.//we are all mixtures of one kind or another,.,,there is no race.....and "black people" are diferent shades of cocoa, and white people are different shades of peach, generally. the whole idea of colors as races is primitive in todays world. |

she isn't mixed.
being mixed would be Black / White.. Black / Asian.. Mexican / White
Jamaican isn't another race..it's the same as being African American. Being considered Jamaican is a Nationality.. just like Japanese and Chinese are considered Asians. |

Jamaicans are not a race unto themselves. Black Jamaicans are African Jamaican, not African American, unless they are Americans.
If they are Black Jamaican Americans, I believe you leave "African" out of it - otherwise they become African Jamaican American and that just gets too ridiculous after a point.
I am shocked to read the idiotic answers you're getting here. Black is a race, not Jamaican. Jamaica is an island, not a race.
"But even allowing for overlaps and generalisations and mixtures we can classify three broad racial types in the modern world.
Caucasoids. 1,000 million people with variable skin colour; white-dark brown. Hair variable, never woolly, body hair often thick. Lips tend to be thin. Three subdivisions exist, the Nordic, the Mediterranean and the Alpine.
The Nordic group are often tall, blonde and narrow headed - Scandinavia, Baltic, Germany, France, Britain The Mediterranean group (Southern France, Spain, Italy and oddly, Wales Egyptians, Semites, Persians, Afghans and some Indians. Lighter in body build, dark and narrow headed. The Alpine group extends from the Mediterranean to Asia. Broad headed, square jaws, olive skin, brown hair.
Mongoloids Most numerous of the present day populations, split into three groups
* The Eastern Siberians, Eskimos and the Northern American Indians
* The Japanese, Koreans, Chinese
* The Indonesians and Malays
Negroids 100 million from Africa south of the Sahara and Melanesians of the S Pacific.
Others. We also have to fit in somewhere the Central African pigmies, the Bushmen and the Australoids." (Cited below) |
