Is Puerto Rico a tourist hotspot like Cancun?

I want to travel somewhere this summer but I generally hate tourist traps/hotspots like Cancun. Is Puerto Rico considered a very touristy spot? I'm also considering Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. I don't like to travel to another country only to be surrounded by more Americans.

I'm not saying zero tolerance, but I like to experience other cultures and since I'll be traveling with some other people I won't be able to go somewhere too far away like Italy.

I'd prefer to hear from someone who's well traveled and has actually been to Puerto Rico, specifically San Juan as that's probably where we'll end up if we choose PR.

Puerto Rico can be a little touristy in some areas...but nothing like Cancun nor the D.R. (at least where most people go to such as Punta Cana, Bavaro, Puerto Plata). It is also less touristy than Costa Rica...but Costa Rica is not so much for it's beach resorts like the other 3 destinations. Costa Rica pushes more ecotourism.

I have been to Cancun....the beaches were nice but nothing else was special. Dominican Republic was about the same...except for the people were a lot poorer and it was so strange between the two worlds: the resorts and the shacks/huts that people have to live in, but work at million dollar resorts. So unfair.

Puerto Rico has history and culture. Visit Old San Juan, which is a neighborhood of San Juan. It is gorgeous. Also go to El Yunque, a tropical rainforest not to far from San Juan. Go to Loiza Aldea in order to buy some great artesanias. If you can go to Fajardo in oder to catch a ferry to Culebra. Culebra is paradise....but expensive to live. In short, I would suggest PR because it is cheap to fly there, there is no customs nor immigration (you are a US citizen), you use American dollars, and many people speak English (I don't know if you speak Spanish or not). Clearly if you wanted to speak Spanish...you can. It is the preferred language.

Puerto Rico is great...a country within a country!

A little Southern Comfort
Youre def on the right track! Out of all the places you mentioned, I would say that Puerto Rico is the most traveled and the least dangerous.
I lost a associate in Costa Rica. She was kidnapped and murdered while she was on vacation there. Not to be funny or scare you! I mean it's rare...but it happens.
Puerto Rico is really cool, becuase it is a happening place, but it's not crazy like Cancun. It's not as nasty either. It's very nice and clean and luxurious and not that costy. I would stick with Puerto Rico!

Everybody
Cancun is filled with Crazy American College Students.

Puerto Rico is more family oriented.

In Puerto Rico, yes, it is a hotspot, but it is very traditional and very family oriented, as another answerer said.
Depending on where you are, there are tourists. For example, in PR there are many tourists in an Juan. If you want to get away from it go to somewhere like Ponce, Aguadilla, Mayaguez, etc.

San Juan is very luxurious and awesome...you will love it!
Puerto Rico is a great place for a cultural experience. The food is great, people are warm and it is very traditional and family oriented.

You will find great hotels like Ritz Carlton and more in San Juan and PR. There are also great restaurants, cinemas and malls!
PR has the biggest mall of the Caribbean. Plaza Las Americas. It has lots of stores and it's awesome. And there are lots of flea markets, where one can buy tourist things and more.

PR is not very expensive, but it is almost the same as US or maybe more expensive. It is all depending on your budget.
You won't regret it! We have the best food, places and beaches<3

Have fun be safe

Visitors to the island flock to its pristine beaches, such as Luquillo Beach on the northeastern corner. Light brown sand and blue-green water gives way to lush palm forests that wave gently in the cool trade winds. The surrounding ocean is very deep; the Puerto Rico Trench, to the north, drops to 28,231 feet – the deepest known point of the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to the main island, Puerto Rico includes several off-shore islands; Vieques, Culebra and Mona. Although uninhabited, Mona Island is a diver’s favorite because of its abundant marine life.

I think PR is cool. Cancun is insane. It is not stupid, some people are stupid like you know who... she probably lives in a cave. Anyways i agree with Southern Confort and TIm. It depends what u want. Also you have more things to do in PR. Cancun is just an area where the cool hotels are in just one street. PR is an entire ISLAND with a lot to do.

Plus you will like puertorican food better... than mexican.

Cosita Rica
Mazatlan is a good one, look it up and then decide;)
