Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States..
We are Not Independent but We are Not a State. |

Puerto Rico is not part of the United States, its under the control of the United States government. Its called a territory of the United States. There is a huge difference in being part of the United States and being a territory of the United States. Its not deemed to be considered an independent nation due to the fact that the U.S. has had Puerto Rico under colonial rule since 1898. |

Nope, it is not. It is a free associated commonwealth or country |

Puerto Rico is NOT part of the United States. The United States is composed of 50 states and the District of Columbia. It does belong to the United States (just like the US Virgin Islands and Guam) and Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens but Puerto Ricans do not pay federal taxes nor vote in national elections. That is only reserved for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Puerto Rico is NOT part of the United States in the past. |

It is not part of the US. It is a self governing country with a compact or treaty of association with the US called Estado Libre Asociado (english translation: commonwealth). Puerto Rico is a latin american nation. |

When it is convenient, Puerto Rico is part of the U.S., like when there is a need for soldier, the army recruits heavily, since they know that given the economy of Puerto Rico, which is terrible, people are looking for an out, and the Armed Forces provide a job, a dangerous one, but when you need money, well, you need money.
When it is inconvenient, then Puerto Rico is not part of the U.S. True, federal income tax is not paid by Puertorrican living in Puerto Rico, but other federal taxes are paid (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid), but the U.S. discriminates in those, Puertorricans do not receive the full amount of benefits if they live in Puerto Rico, but the moment they move to a state, they do. Thus, Puertorricans pay into the system and if they stay in the Island, they do not receive the full benefits (to me something is wrong here, if you pay full share, you should receive full benefits when you need them). The Supreme Court of the United States invented a new way to deal with Puerto Rico during the Insular Cases in the early 1900's. Puerto Rico was classified as an unorganized territory. Previous to that, all territories were organized territories, with the intention of eventually giving them statehood. Puerto Rico was classified this way, because the U.S. did not want a state in which the majority is not WASP. Up to 1917, Puertorricans were not U.S. citizens, but the Jones Act changed that, why you might ask? 1917 = WWI, need for soldiers. I do not believe it was just a coincidence. At any rate, when there is something that the U.S. needs, Puerto Rico is part of the mainland, when not, they are not. |

Puerto Rico should be part of Trinidad and Tobago. The US is just too advanced for us. ...or Barbados would be good, with their strong-bodied negritoes and well breasted mulatas.
Screw the US, they just raised the prices at Disney World again. But in Barbados, a nickel will get you the mulata for a good half an hour. And I mean a good half and hour. Just tell the kids she is 'Mickey Mouse' but couldn't find the costume... and not to tell mom about the bathroom 'party'.
Long live the Puerto Rican Queen... (el pato de anibal).... |

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. We use the dollar and the US Postal Service. Both flags, Puerto Rico's and USA's fly in front of our governmental agencies. |
