It is a self-governing Commonwealth of the United States that is subject to Federal law. However, all local affairs such as education, taxation, etc.. are handled by the government only. The U.S. can't meddle in island elections (as seen recently after the election for governor was disputed by the losing party). Puerto Rico is also allowed to have international representation such as in sporting events like the Olympics, beauty pageants, etc. They also have their own country internet code (.pr) and have a solid national identity. |

No PR is considered a commonwealth. In many ways it is great to be from PR cuz you get the obvious citizenship, you get PR holidays and US holidays, but they have to pay taxes yet can't vote for president! What kind of craziness is that? |
