No. No passport is required if you are a US citizen. It is like travelling to any other state. Puerto Rico is a US Commonwealth. You only need a valid state authorized photo ID. Enjoy!

---------------------
Those who say you needed it starting January were misinformed. You need it for all caribbean EXCEPT Puerto Rico & the US Virgin Islands.

No. San Juan is part of the United States.

No. Puerto Rico is an Special Autonomous region of the USA, a territory of the USA, like Guam ...and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It would be like travelling to Hawaii or any other state.
Nonetheless if you are planning on going to the nearby islands or go on a cruise, it would be advisable to bring a passport.

If you're a US citizen coming from the US then you don't need a passport by air or sea. Good luck on the trip and if you need any assistance or want more information you can contact Casto Visa Passport for a free consultation.

Charlie
Those who said NO are correct.See site below and read last sentence under "Land and Sea Travel."

It all depends on Your Immigration status.

Us citizen coming from the United states=a Valid state ID.

Legal resident of the United states=Their countries Passport and (green card) Alien resident Card.

People from other countries=Their Country Passport with a Valid b2 Tourist visa

The "NO's" are correct and well-supported. Flights between the USA mainland and Puerto Rico are domestic flights, just like between New York and Atlanta, etc., and a photo ID is enough. There is no passport control or customs inspection. However, if you want to make a short hop to any foreign islands near PR, you need a passport.

One more twist. Although within the US Customs zone, PR is outside the USDA zone, so you may expect to have your luggage inspected for meats, fruits, vegetables, etc., on your return. Conveniently, that's done at the San Juan airport before you leave.

Considering that Purto Rico is a US territory, my initial reaction would be to say no. However, since new state department regulations require (as of 1/23/2008) all US citizens leaving the continental US for destinations in the Caribbean require passports, I say yes.

Depending on when you intend to leave, you may have to expedite your passport processing. Cost me about a hundred dollars extra when I got mine in March of last year.

A neat trick is to simply apply for it whenever and when you're three weeks from your departure date, fax the appropriate government officials (someone in the Dep. of State) your travel itinerary and inform them you musty have your passport for travel. My brother did this in October of 2007 and he got his back in time to travel and paid no expedition fees.
