For excursions in the Dominican Republic, don't buy them in the hotel (especially from your tour operator) they are to expensive! Just after the first day(s) to accommodate, look around the resort and you will find excellent prices for the same excursions. ( north coast is the best!!)
Happy to help you

No, it's very cheap as far as the Caribbean goes. The resorts are all inclusive. That includes water sports and spas and buffets. It's really great. I'm half Dominican and I go there to visit family. This fall, we're going to Samana, DR. It's a really awesome place with a resort, and many divers and snokelers go there for the crystal clear waters and fish diversity. It is paradise. Not many Americans know that the Dominican Republic is far cheaper than Puerto Rico, but a lot of people just want a Walgreens nearby like back home so that's why they go there. Also, the Dominican Republic is still very forested and it's great. Bear in mind, there is poverty, but it's a GREAT place. There is even River Rafting there because of the large mountains. The coastal areas aren't the only paradise-like places. There are rainforest areas that are absolutely beautiful, just breathtaking. I recommend that you go, definitely! You'll have a great time! |

A day trip with the hotel will cost you starting at $80US. Souvenirs in tourist areas are more pricier than you can get it at other places, but it really depends on what you buy. Overall given the exchange rate you get a decent deal. |

Like everywhere, if you shop around you'l get it cheaper!
A couple of things we learnt were:
DO NOT buy out of the hotel shops. They are so expensive! When we were there my little brother paid £1.50 for a KINDER EGG.
In town, the supermarkets, it is alot cheaper so try not to buy gifts in the hotel! This can be a good day trip also - going out into town buying presents.
We found that the tour operators prices were horendous! and learnt gradually that on beachs there will be people selling excursions, you can haggle cos ofcourse they will want a bonus for themselves but when you are paying and tipping at the end of the excursion its better to try and get it cheap.
Every dominican i met seems to think because you are foreign you are loaded so added on the extra pounds but its easy enough to turn them down and haggle.
Compare prices! you'l see various people advertising day trips, you'l have a great time! Its not expensive if you shop around like i said.. best wishes! |

The day trips are charged in US dollars and the prices are for foreigners, which means, not very cheap. For example a day trip to Manati park is $25 and if you buy a beer there it will be $4. If you go to the local village it will be cheaper but you have to bargain. Dominican people love to bargain, it is part of their culture, so to get a better price at a local vendor (if you buy a painting or jewelry), you have to bargain.
For example I was offered $80 for a bracelet and I bought it for $20 :) |

Think of it this way...it's a second world country. Nothing is expensive there (Im dominican). Food, souvenirs ect. all incredibly cheap. If it cost $45 to get your hair done here it cost $5 including the tip there. Have a blast! |
