Puerto Plata is the best place for 24 hour entertainment. Ranging from excursions during the day, best hotels with entertainment & the nightlife........endless clubs, bars + restaurants..
I have been to Puerto Plata twice & loved it both times. Not only is the area one of the best in the Dominican Republic (thats my opinion but it clearly is) but it is one of the safest.
I am a 19 year old white girl (I look young and obviously stood out in clubs due to me being one of the only white people) + yet never had any hassle/problems.
I went with some of the staff from out resort.....we stayed at RIU Mambo + had a fantastic time.
I think if you ask at you're resort, they will be more than happy to get you cheap taxis, show you the ropes and so on. Dont be afraid to do this..they may expect a little tip though! + perhaps a odd drink! I made friends with the animation staff at our hotels though so didnt get charged a penny, infact, they asked me to go out!!

Domincan Republic is awesome!! You have to be careful as you would in any foreign country, but don't worry. It's not terrible. You should be fine.
More info on why it's so awsome and stuff to do (!!!): |

We send a lot of students to learn Spanish in Santo Domingo through: http://www.spanishabroad.com/santodomingo.htm
We have not had a problem yet in the 12 years we have been in business which I think says a lot for safety. However you can have crime such as pick pockets and I am sure muggings are possible but I have not seen them in the headlines myself. This is the capital and has great nightlife. Most of our students travel alone and seem to have a fun social life there.
The school helps facilitate with the courses and additional activities, but I am sure you would be find even on your own if you are somewhat social or part of a tour group. Knowing a little Spanish definitely helps with the locals but is not necessary as I have sent complete beginners as well. |

go to Santo Domingo,
nightlife: some clubs La Fortuna, La Guacara Taina but really there are tons.
Ive gone many times but with friends of mine who live there, but I have visited many times and never felt unsafe. I feel more unsafe in Detroit at night than Sto Dgo.
enjoy!
it helps if you know spanish! |

Yes, Dominican Republic is a safe county for tourist. Santo Domingo is a good option for enjoy the nightlife, there are a lot of bars, night clubs, restaurants, casinos & more.. The people is welcoming.
You can visit some cultural places too, and visit Boca Chica, a Beautiful beach, 30 mins. away from Santo Domingo, and maybe take some tour to a nearby destination.
Cabarete is a good option too, it is a beach town with a vibrant nightlife, during the day you can enjoy the beach and at night meet the locals in one of many bar and nightclub.

Dominican Republic has changed for worst in the last 3 years. I would never recommend a tourist to hang out alone, unless you know the place you are at. Right now the most popular hot spot is Bavaro, which is still a safe area. |
