Is homophobia big in Puerto Rico?

Okay, I'm Puerto Rican. I left when I was in the Fourth grade and have been in the U.S. ever since. I might have to move back there because my mom says so. And yes. I'm gay. I don't want to move back to Puerto Rico. And I"m even more scared that the homophobia there is large. Please help me. Do you know if it's accepting?

I was from the Cabo Rojo/Mayaguez area.

Homophobia is abundant in Puerto RIco, but so is acceptance. I wouldn't worry about it too much you won't be alone, and the people who are worth knowing won't care at all. I have lived here almost 10 years and I can tell you the climate is changing, violence against homosexuals is down, and there is a much more open minded attitude. Good luck, and btw cabo rojo is a beautiful, so it might be worth it.

One of my friends who just came to the US from Puerto Rico told me how his mom absolutely flipped when he told her he was bi and didn't let him hang out with his friends (because one of them was gay). It could be because they are from Puerto Rico or unfortunately because most of the world doesn't accept homosexuality. I'm sorry that's all I really know but he did tell me that he is much happier in the US, maybe because the area we live in is more understanding?

I have no idea being in England and all, lol. But the first two answers? No. You be who you are and if people don't like it they can get over it. Keep low? Why!? What have you got to be ashamed of? x

im from cabo rojo/ mayaguez too!
and i go there twice a year to visit my grandparents and fam
well i also left puerto rico in the 4th grade, and i live in california
its extremely different.. in puerto rico theyre very like proud of themselves, and i have a friend there who is gay, and he just came out of the closet last year when he was 16, and people didnt treat him very nicely (people he didnt know) but all his friends remained the same, and yeah i think its like everywhere, there are people who are ok with it and there are people who dont like it

I think it must be accepted on some level. I was in Puerto Rico during the summer and while there they had a gay pride parade. It looked like a pretty big turn out and I saw a few people walking around with flags.

Hiii , I live here In Puerto Rico and really dont even worry about it...just be yourself...here we are very friendly and open minded...Theres alot of places that you could go, especially in santurce they have alot of clubs that you could go to...theres not alot of discrimination here for being gay- But remember you are ALWAYS going to find people that are against it...so just be yourself and enjoy the island...and dont care what people say!!! :-)

People everywhere are against things they do not or cannot understand. Asking if a certain area is big on a certain subject is like trying to figure out whos republican and whos democratic.. You never know.. But if your that insecure about being gay I would suggest keeping it on the down low until you find some nice friends or people that would have ya back =)

You could try to quit being gay and return to a normal male-female relationship
It may work out better
