Is it a bad idea to bring a baby 0-3 months to jamaica?

Hello...

Just wanted to give my two cents since I've been in your situation before...

You can absolutely take a baby to Jamaica. As with any travel plans you will need to consider emergency medical plans and hopefully you won't need it!

When I took my 5 month old, my major concerns were mosquitos and milk.

We were going into the "country" -- 2 hours inland from Montego Bay. From past experience, I knew that mosquitos can be quite bothersome. To prevent bites, we took mosquito repellant (ask your pediatrician for a safe brand for infants). We also took the battery operated repellent key chains (Walgreens has these). They didn't work for me, but they seemed to work for my two kids. Lastly, we found a pop-up bassinet that was covered with a mosquito net. The top zips open, you place the baby inside, then zip it closed. The top is a very fine mesh so you can see the baby and vice versa.

Our other main concern was milk. If your wife is planning on breastfeeding exclusively, this won't be a big deal. If you plan on using formula, you will have to pack enough of it in your luggage. Of course they do have formula in Jamaica but the brands are all different (at least the labeling is) and I wouldn't trust that the brand you buy is necessarily the same content-wise as the same brand on the shelf in the U.S.

Otherwise, since you're in Florida, your flight will be pretty short. Of course you'll want to have milk for the baby to drink especially during take-off and landing because babies don't know how to pop their ears to relieve the pressure.

Call your airline ahead of time to let them know that the baby will be coming. They will not likely require a paid ticket, but they need to have the baby's name on the manifest.....

And lastly, you didn't ask this but I'm on a roll.... you will have to RUN to apply for passport as soon as possible for the baby because they need proof that you applied for a passport to let you back in to the U.S. See links below.

As a REAL JAMAICAN who actually lives in the country (dont liste to those other peple) it is absoluely safe to bring the baby here. As you know the baby's immune system is not fully developed so make sure the baby has all the important shots as the baby may be suceptible to tropical diseases. Anywhere you are travelling make sure your child has all its shots cuz you never know whatkind of harmful bacteria is around.Bring a lot of losse fitted clothes for the baby cuz it can get a little warm

No I don't think it would be a bad idea to bring a baby to Jamaica. He or she will have thier first of baby shots after a certain time right? So I think your baby will be just fine. What does your family or friends say about the idea of you bringing your baby with you?

If your worried about anything concerning the baby why don't you ask your family doctor see what he or she has to say about the idea. I think your doctor would be the one to ask for the right information. Give it a try and see what the doctor says and if she or he says its fine then you'll have your correct answer.

It's not a bad idea at all, the health system is great in Jamaica, just make sure your baby is up to date on all the require shots. My sister went to Jamaica with her twin babies when they were just 2 months old, and they were fine, one of the babies got a cold and the health care system was great, the babies are now 9 months old and back in the US and doing great, so don't listen to those other ignorant answers, those people probably never even traveled to Jamaica before so they have no idea. It gets hot, so go prepared for the weather and you will be fine.

As a Jamaican I can honesty say that your child will be fine. No one will be kidnapping your child to sell as a previous answer stated(stupid answer) and the health systems are great. I do however suggest that you vaccinate your child as she is more prone to illnesses she might contract while in confined spaces such as the plane et cetera. Ask your doctor more about that. Carry her...it will be a great addition to your baby photo album.

Hey- Mon! -It's the safest place on the Planet!!!. - It's the PLANE trip that gonna be the rough part... Holiday travel is ALWAYS chancy at best... And with the Winter weather and all...-Don't you have a close Relative or neighbor you can leave the Baby with for a few days? That might be the best way to go...

I don't think you were asking if it was a safe place, but whether it would be a good ideal. I think you should leave the baby at home with grandparents. If you have never been to Jamaica then you in for a treat, especially going to a wedding. It will be a festival time, your honeymoon (if you did not have one). You are going to want to enjoy the sun, sand and the beautiful water. You may want to do a little something at night on the beach. So, I say do not take the baby this time, she/he will be so young that they will not remember it.
Go and have a grand time without feeling any guilt.

in response to Stephanie S., have you checked the US health system recently? I recently waited at a hospital emergency room in Massachusetts for well over 3 hours before I was properly attended.
As for your question, you need to take the same precautions you would anywhere with your Baby. If she/he falls sick, just take the Baby to a reputable hospital (I would recommend a private hospital. quicker treatment, and the health care system is no where near as expensive in the US). There is also a public/research/university affiliated hospital that has world class facilities and is very reasonable-- UWI.
You need to consider who and where you will leave your baby if you decide to go out.
If you plan carefully, and make smart decisions, you will be fine.

Be more concerned with the baby on a plane than Jamaica itself. Take precautions like you would going on any trip whether domestic or international. Your main problem may be mosquito bites, find out what you can use on an infant, they don't recommend the regular insect repellants.

if you take a baby there it will be to hot so make sure you have lots of water with you only give the baby bottled water

you should talk to your peditrician. you need to consider shots etc... and jamaica is a poor country so would you trust their health system if an emergency arosed. alot of air carriers wont allow a baby on board as well bein that young.also consider how long flight is that will be one cranky baby.use the tickets as a moommy and daddy get a way youll need it. congrats and good luck with your blessing.
