Is it a bad idea to take a taxi from Negril to Port Antonio?

I am traveling to Jamaica soon and I was thinking of staying one half of my trip in Negril and then the second half in Port Antonio. When thinking of how to get from on side to the other I planned to take a taxi. Is it a bad idea to take a taxi that far in Jamaica, and around how much would it cost. I have heard some negative things about taking a taxi that far and am now considering just staying in Negril the whole time.
Additional Details
I don't think i am going to take a taxi to PA anymore. It would cost upwards of 250 dollars for one way and it can take forever to get their (over 6 hours) that would be like losing two days of my vacation. Everyone here was positive about taking a taxi, but on other forums everyone discouraged it, especially native Jamaicans.

I love Port Antonio... it's among the more serene places in the island. Taking a taxi is a smart idea.... call all of these numbers and find out how much it will cost. It is always a good idea to travel with an established company, like the ones at the link below. You will be fine.

They are oppostie ends of the island. You could find out if there is a shutlle that will you from one end of the island to the other

Its not a bad idea at all it all depends on the driver, not everyone in Jamaica is seeking a bad reputation, yes you do have taxis that do robat service, meaning they are not registered / insured properly or at all,so its up to to find who's is who, negotiating one.
Or you can try JUTA tours they will cost little bit more but offers a peace of mind.
Round trip such as that can cost as much as 3500, 4000 & up! J$ with a regular taxi person, convert to US http://www.xe.com/ucc/ & that also depends on your street smart how you approach people with your business, dont be a afraid ask the appropriate question and genuine persons of interest will respond, you cant afford to have a few bad apple out there spoil you urge to see and discover.
However any official taxi tour sevices will be more expensive.

Excellent question.

That is perhaps one of the longer trips in the island.
You surely want a good price, but moreover you want a trusting and reliable driver.

We have some real dependable driver around but you may find some unscrupulous ones as well who may want to overcharge you.

You will also need someone who can show you aspects of Jamaica as you go.

This page will provide you much of that information. A popular local driver is recommended as well. [go to the 'local taxi' section.

Enjoy your time!

Taxis can be expensive. Public buses are a lot cheaper, but it will take a while, you will have to change buses, and it is a bit uncomfortable. I still travel that way when I go because of a lack of funds. Stay in both places that way you feel the different vibes. Have fun!

Ask around for a good taxi man. Love your choices of destinations-2 of my favourite places in Jamaica. I'm jealous. It might be better to go with a taxi company and negotiate the price before you leave, next thing you hear a different price when you reach.

Port Antonio and Negril are both beautiful. It should be a nice taxi ride.

You should be able to arrange for someone to drive you for a negotiated price. It will be a nice drive with great scenery.

While at your first hotel, talk to the resort staff and they'll hook you up with somebody. Don't ask at the front desk, ask some of the activities people. Don't be surprised if one of them volunteers to drive you himself if it's his day off. Jamaicans are usually very eager to find ways to make a few extra dollars.

If both resorts provide airport transfers (very common), then you could just take the hotel transport van back to MoBay airport, then take the next hotel's transport van to Port Antonio.

I almost forgot! You might be able to fly from Negril to Port Antonio. TimAir flies small planes out of negril. I've used them several times between MoBay airport and Negril. They also fly to Port Antonio. Contact them to see if they'll do direct from Negril to Port Antonio. They aren't very expensive. www.timair.com
