Well ER,
You just need some cash US dollars for the entrance (airport)10 US and 20 US by departure. For the rest of your time over there you can redraw local money (Pesos) from a bank cashier (ATH) so you will have the best rate and so don't loose 2x on excange rates if you buy US Dollars.
Enjoy your stay |

You can bring any foreign currency. You can exchange money anywhere at a bank or currency shop or the guys on the street corners. The guys on the corners give a good rate. They are always going "change money, change money" You will get a better rate in the DR than at home.
A beer is about 80-100 pesos in most tourist bars, 40-60 in local bars. You can also buy them in stores for about 30. They will even pop the cap for you. Bottle opener is "distapador." "Tienes distapador" means "do you have a bottle opener?"
Don't exchange at All Incusives since they usually have the worst rates.
Cash points are also everywhere and they work with foreign cards. Check to make sure someone else uses it though since sometimes they are made to jam so your card gets stolen. |

Take both. Most places accept american money, but just in case because you may not be able to exchange for pesos. Have fun :) |

I'd take the 30 dollars each for entrance and leaving fees and then the rest draw out once there.
Seriously, you lose so much by changing from pounds to dollars and then pesos. Its easier to just withdraw it.
Besides, if you take US dollars - its harder to keep track of you're money as all shops + things give change in pesos.
Frequantly ripping you off. |

my suggestion, take about $50.00 U. S. with you then obtain Pesos as you need them from the ATMs. In tourist areas no problem using U. S. dollars however in remote areas there may be a problem and keep in mind when changing the buyer of your dollars will err to his benefit before he errs in yours. Check the site below for approximate rates. |

This is what we did.
Brought US$ with us.
Your tour operator/representative will be able to change your US$ to pesos for you, and will also buy them back when you leave.
We only used pesos for the gift shops and at the flea market. With that being said, your Visa, AMEX or whatever is just as good at the shops.
Tipped in US$.
If you need to call home, your better off using the telephone in your hotel room, rather than buying a calling card. It is much cheaper to do it that way.
If it's your first time, you would be really smart if you talked with the tour operator/representative. She/he will have a lot of useful information for you. |

American Dollars in widely accepted as form of payment, and you can exchange them in a lot of places, just keep your receipt. Pesos or US Dollars is OK, but in tourist areas the prices use to be in US Dollars. A bottle of beer cost to you about US$1.50 |

A bottle of beer = 50 pesos, so it is cheap over there! But you don't need to change any money in your country, once arrived you can use ATH (wall) and redraw the amount you need from the cashier.
You can pay over there in Dominican pesos or Us dollars, but why should you change your currency for dollars? This is loosing 2x on the exchange rates. |
