Is it forbidden by law for United States people to travel to Cuba?

Additional Details
Thanks for the answers so far.
What consequences do you have to face, if you get 'caught' going there without 'permission'?

we are not allowed to travel there for vacation. Only for humanitarian reasons. US citizens are not allowed to spend money in Cuba. That is what the ban is. The question is how do you travel to Cuba and not spend money? exactly....we can't go there

to answer 2nd part of question:
The Treasury Department has the authority to level civil fines up th $50,000 on individuals who violate the embargo

I may not have the best answer but boy! there are soo many people who give answers without knowing a thing about this matter, americans can travel to Cuba only on especial situations like for Studies , investigations , journalism , etc, this people have to request a permit to the US dept of State, the cuban americans can travel to Cuba to visit an inmediate family they have to request the same permit from the Department of State, we can only do this every 3 years for 2 weeks , we are allowed to bring up to 50.00 per day for personal expenses and 300.00 for our family.
Of course there are people who travel to Cuba and dont request the permit , they either go tru Cancun, Jamaica , Bahamas or Canada and the authorities in Cuba do not stamp your passport if you request it.
The consecuences of doing this ; a hefty fine $$$.$$$
So is not forbidden but is not to travel freely without suffering future consecuences

Minister
I thought it was, but I've seen several media people, and Communist Politicians do it, so maybe I'm wrong.

US citizens and residents are not technically prohibited from travelling to Cuba, but from spending money there, so it is essentially a travel ban in all but name. Permits from the Treasury Department to go there are increasingly rare and never for tourist purposes. The Cuban government has no restrictions on Americans coming in to Cuba and welcome Americans with open arms. Many Americans, since they cannot travel directly to Cuba because of the travel ban, go to another country and fly into Cuba. Americans caught upon returning to the US, sometimes by pre-clearance customs in Canada and the Bahamas, face fines but enforcement has recently waned. Americans thus tend to go to countries without pre-clearance customs (Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc.) and take their chances. Cuba does not stamp US passports.

tess
The Cubans don't care if americans go there. We flew out of Vancouver and several US citizens were on our plane. They have no flights from the US, so they just cross the line & fly from Canada.

WPB_LV_AV
Yes; if you go you have to travel with someone who is from another country and can travel to Cuba.

*au natural*
Yes, unless you were originally born in Cuba and moved to the States, you're able to return but only for a certain amount of time. However, I'm not too sure how successful this is but I hear people fly to the Dominican Republic or Costa Rica (...etc) and from there fly to Cuba.

Czech Chick
The Sunday issue of the San Francisco Chronicle (FEBRUARY 16, 2003) noted that "U.S. feds get tough on Americans who visit Cuba." The author quoted a U.S. official who stated that the US Treasury Department does not allow U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba because it seeks to deny the Cuban government the income that could be generated from such visits.

YET, the U.S. government allows Cuban Americans to travel to the island, at least every 12 months. Thus, the dollars of Cuban Americans can be spent in Cuba; but the dollars from non-Cuba born US citizens cannot. Why such policy? Because the U.S. government assumes that when the Cuban Americans travel to the island they will not support the Cuban regime. But the US government assumes that the average American will find the island and its government acceptable and perhaps even delightful.

ghosthunters_girl_88
dont think so

Yancy
yes, but you still can

christal66
You can't go to Cuba directly from the US, but you can always transfer. The reason why they don't allow direct flights is because the Cuban officials don't want Americans to bring over any kind of disease.

No, you are allowed to go there, but you have to fly in from another country. My friends have been to Cuba, and they are from the USA, but they flew from Guatemala.

flightpillow
You have to travel through Canada.
