Everything will be ok. I'm from Puerto Rico I'd lived my whole life in Puerto Rico. My advice is just be careful like you are in your country. Every country have issues, but its not like you can't be alone somewhere. San Juan is a great place, give the best effort on learning Spanish, 'cause you're gonna be on a tourism town, so you'll find a lot of people that speaks English. Oh, you're gonna feel better and safer because you're going to be with a home stay family. They're going to give some advice. Besides you're almost and adult. At night you can go to pub or discos. That's not my style of fun, I preferred going to the movies or spending time with my family and friends. But a lot of youngs like me, love to go to places where they can dance and drink. Oh, you'll be finding homeless people or drug addict people like any other country, so try to not be alone at night. They're not going to harm you but maybe you'll feel uncomfortable. Peace out. You'll have a great experience. Try your best to learn Spanish. I recently turned 26 so if you need a friend, you can count with me. My email is: tursy23@hotmail.com |

YES! I used to live in San Juan for 3 years alone and I never had issues. Just like in other place of the world, just be cautious like you do here in the US. |

You'll be fine, I'm from San Juan Puerto Rico...Puerto Rico is my roots...Think about it everywhere you go there always a few knuckle heads...Just don't go anywhere at night by yourself and thats anywhere you go...It's beautiful..There's lots to do and you can travel the entire island in one day, lol...There's the night scene very popular for tourist..The hotels have night clubs and casinos in them, the food is great...Let me know when your going and I can tell you what's happening out there..On different months we celebrate different things and there lot of festivals, concerts and etc going on...You'll have tons of fun keep in touch

You are alright inSan Juan. Everyday plenty of young girls like you , work, go to school, shop and do anything with no mayor problem. Have a nice time in your visit and hope that you learn plenty of "español". |

I lived in Puerto Rico until I was 21. I found Puerto Rico to be a safe place to grow up. But again it's all up to you as to where you hang out. If you hang looking for trouble...most likely you will find it. Other than that, you will have an awesome time, with warm and caring Puerto Ricans. One of our best traits...our warm and caring nature. Do not worry and have a great stay in Puerto Rico. If you happen to be there during the holidays, by all means try to hook up with a Parranda...now we talking :-) Best Regards, Roberto Rivera |

IS THIS PROGRAM BEING OFFERED THRU YOUR SCHOOL ? IF SO I THINK YOU WILL BE IN FOR A VERY REWARDING EXPERIENCE. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE THOUGH, SAN JUAN LIKE ANY BIG CITY IS UNSAFE FOR YOUNG SOLO WOMEN OR YOUNG SOLO MEN FOR THAT MATTER, DO NOT GO OUT ESPECIALLY AT NITE BY YOURSELF !!
BEST OF LUCK,

Puerto Rico as the Dominican Republic are very safe places to vacation.
Just as with everything, take precautions, but don't let paranoia keep you from enjoying the friendliness of the locals. |

you know what, you can never be sure, bu you CAN always try to be careful, you Will be in an entirely new place and you will not know the norm or routine or culture for that matter, I think that this could be an extremely rewarding trip for you if you try to get the most out of it. Keep on the look out and be as safe as possible, I hope this works out or you and that you come home happy and fulfilled. |

It's just like any other country, there are good things and bad things, I can tell you that I've lived in Puerto Rico for 26 years and never been robbed, just because I've been cautious. Besides, you'll hang out with lots of friends or students so you won't be alone. You have to go to the Cavernas de Camuy, awesome and the beaches yummmy. Try to go one weekend to Culebra, its gorgeous and at night you can see all the stars in the sky!! |

NO, it's not safe! The strong point against it is that it's unsafe for a girl to travel abroad alone it today's world. The word "unsafe" is the key factor in this strong point, and the word stands on it's own merit. |
