Its just as safe for you to travel to Jamaica as it is to travel to Chicago,Detroit,L.A, New York. these people are poor, but are the most friendliest people i have ever met, they have just been dealt a bad hand. i am from Detroit and am not worried about either, no matter were you go any more you have to use street smarts, and i would travel to Jamaica any day before i would go to many major city's, most people in Jamaica are just looking to make some money either by selling goods or pictures ect. i would say unless your talking about Kingston that must of Jamaica(OchiosRios,Montego Bay, Negril) are safer than your own town. just be smart don't flash cash, cloth's or other items that draw attention, and you will be fine.

Of course! It is like the travel pioneer of the Carribean. Honestly, I have to be careful anywhere I go, home or abroad. I advise you the same. Don't be a target. Keep a low profile. Jamaican people take pride in allowing you to pleasure their island safely. Find a good Jamaican to show you around the traditional areas. The tourist areas are pretty tight security.

Of course it is, IF you take a bit of adventure with you and a LOT of common sense. Just like when you are in any new/unfamiliar area, whether in the US or wherever you are from. There are dangers just like anywhere.
Don't wear a lot of flashy jewelry, don't flash $$, don't wander off alone ecspecially @ nite, stay with your group. You may be approached by street vendors (who are very persistent) or by people trying to sell you drugs- just be firm and say no, but remember to be polite. Don't leave valuables in your room. etc etc..

I've been to Jamaica numerous times, and am going back again for New Years. Jamaica is like any other tourist destination - generally safe, but watch your wallet in the busy tourist towns, and don't wander off by yourself into the cities at night. I have found the people of Jamaica to be the nicest, friendliest around. It's all going to depend on where you are in Jamaica and what time of day it is.
