No its not stupid, however a lot of people who are unaware of how life in the Caribbean really is believe that living there is taking a step back and it isn't because practically anything you can find on the Mainland US and in most developed nations is readily available in the islands.
Choose wisely on your island and research their lifestyle and be prepared for the changes. |

It's not stupid at all. I was pretty sure I was in heaven when I spent a couple weeks in the Bahamas. |

Not at all stupid. But - its not like vacation when u live there. Things that we take for granted - decent medical care - reasonably intelligent police - social safety nets - often these things are not what you may be used to. Police do a good job protecting the tourist areas - but - if you get off the beaten path?
Keep your head up. |

I live in the Caribbean, and trust me there is no better place to want to live. Some people will say that it is dangerous and all, but it ain't more dangerous than living anywhere else. Huricanes? not all the islands get them. Aruba Bonair and Curacao have not seen a full huricane in over 100 years. and even if, U get plenty of warning to an incomming huricane, and there is plenty of time to get out of the way or prepare.
so go for it |

It's your dream, it's not stupid. I want to own my own personal island and run a cucumber farm with adopted children helping me operate the farm and make pickles. xD Is that dream stupid? Weird, but not stupid. |

Well, if someone had told me I would be living on a Caribbean island 3 years ago I would have laughed. But that was always a dream of my husbands so when he saw a job advertised we agreed that he should apply for it and here we are in Barbados.
We are coming up 2 years here now - it is a wonderful life experience but certainly no holiday. Nice vacation spot but lots of challenges if you live here. So maybe go with the "vacation home".
We look forward to returning to Canada when we retire. |

OMG, I can't believe your father said something like that to you. Jennifer, follow your dreams and live a passionate life. Don't listen to the naysayers. Of course, there are always going to be obstacles to success, but you have the power to achieve anything. Just look at Oprah Winfrey, she grew up in extremely poor conditions - she was sexually abused several times when she was young, she was a criminal and was sent to juvenile hall a few times, she gave birth to a still-born when her "boyfriend" left her. She grew up in the ghetto with her mom. Despite of all her obstacles, she still managed to become a billionaire who contibutes to society now. Get this through your mind: YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO! You can live in the carribean islands. Hopefully, I'll get to meet you there one day. Good luck! |

When i retire am definitely going to live on one.Its not stupid, not at all,as long as it is some were as far away from all the stresses that one faces here, its worth it besides property prices are less than half of what you would pay in the USA.Besides from the weather and a few other occasional stuff, that's common and even here in the GREAT USA you have problem that are even far greater than all those little islands combine.Far one you don't have to worry about terrorists.
Its one of the best thoughts you could ever make mention of. |

Some times when we think outisde of what others ever considered or have experienced - persons who are closed minded, never exprienced or want to experience what we want to do will be against our ideas. Go for your dream, sorry to hear that he has loss his.... |

It is not stupid. Many people from around the world have houses in the Caribbean that they use as vacation homes. In St. Maarten Christmas time is Celebrity heaven. Once you can afford it go for it. |

No, it's not stupid.
When I went to Barbados for the first time, I wanted to live there, I went again the 2nd time and stayed with a friend, I still wanted to live there, and I was hoping to find a place to stay, but my friend, Kemar, and his family said I could live with them. Whenever I come down, I go home for vacation, if you get what I'm saying. I've got that family. :) So it's like I have 2 homes. |

When and if you become well off to still want that...consider renting a house for a few months a year. I lived on an island, it gets expensive and old. Everything had to be brought in, the milk and eggs were powdered and everything costs the earth. Too there are many alcoholics and sex maniacs caused from Island life...illegitamacy is the norm...otherwise enjoy it for its laid back culture. |

ofcourse its not stupid.
Dream Big Honey !!!!!
but the thing about going on vacation somewhere and living there is that if you never been there everything is new and exciting, but if you live there it might be alil boring after awhile.
Although a vacation home is always nice. That way eveytime your there your on vaca !!
Just remember when you get the vaca home guess who is gonna be the first to want to come and visit !?? |

Your father probably thought it was stupid because the climate is fierce, the Caribbean is a common path for fierce hurricanes, the islands are politically unstable (even the US Virgin Islands rioted and looted there way through a severe hurricane a couple of years ago) and everything worth having has to be shipped in (which is expensive). |
