Is it true that you need to watch out for "sankie pankie" in the DR?

I have heard that resort workers can really take advantage of unsuspecting vacationers, and make you believe many lies to get you to help them. Not saying anything bad about the most wondeful country, but I just want to be careful on my next trip. I will be traveling alone

when i went there were a lot of creepy guys at my hotel that hit on me.. just beware of of them and try not to make eye contact if you suspect that they are staring at you

Lets put it this way-if your stupid enough to fall for it then you deserve it. When you go on vacation you need to be on your toes. When I was in the DR many of the resort employees talked to me and my friend, they were polite and fun, and worked hard for the little money they made. No one was taken advantage of because we would not allow it to happen and that is exactly what you as a vacationer need to do as well.

I've been to the DR multiple times and have never had a problem. Just go, have a good time, and carry yourself in a manner that you aren't there to meet guys. You do have to be cautious, but you don't have to be paranoid. It's like any other place you go where you don't know anyone, be guarded.

wowww. just be careful with people in general since you dont know anybody there.

When I went there, I did not have any problems. And I agree with you about DR being the most wonderful country. Have fun and GOD bless.

That's not what sankie pankie means, at least not in the DR. You're talking about tigueres, people who prey on others, either conning them or thieving. Sankie pankie refers to the sex tourism that, unfortunately, happens in many resort areas of the DR. Children, male and female, in particular, are being exploited as "sankie pankie" workers. As you can imagine, STD rates in those areas are inordinately high as well.
As for the tigueres, just hold on to your stuff and don't give away what you don't want to. If something is more expensive than you'd like, find an alternative. Often the price will suddenly come down when they realize you just won't pay what they're asking for something you don't need. I never had much trouble in the 2 years I was there.
