Is jamaica as beautiful as people make it sound?

Jamaica is the definition of 'potpourri'. There is such a wide variety of rustic settings here that it is truly amazing.

1) Fabulous beaches.
2) historic towns that have SIGNIFICANT meaning to the history of the western world such as spanish town, port Royal and others.
3) Sprawling tropical wet lands.
4) Exciting urban nightlife
5) Fabulous motorsports routes (as in for rally cars).
6) Athentic reggae music culture
7) Spectacular mountains
8) Diverse, indigenous flora and fauna to match the environment.
9) Exotic dining from the top of mountains to the beach and even an off-shore resturant that you will never forget.

This is a very short list, but there are FEW islands in the caribbean with this diversity. In south america, there is variety, but you have to travel LARGE disances to experience it and its simply a different kind of variety. It cant replace a trip to jamaica.

The U.S.A. is similarly segmented. Imagine that all Jamaica's diversity is in an island a mere fraction of the size of the Grand Canyon.

Cuba has variety as well, but until the embargo is lifted i cant tell you how it really compares. I suspect that it does.

"oooohh, the resorts are beautiful, blah blah blah, but outside is impoverished and ugly, blah, blah, blah."

Of course the resorts will be beautiful.....that's why you pay them tons of cash, right?

In my opinion, EVERYWHERE has poor people. If that's the only thing you are willing to see as a visitor, it's best you don't bother to come here.

Jamaica is plenty times more beautiful than people make it out to be. Words can't describe it enough, in fact. And I am not being biased because I grew up here, but the country is just unique in so many ways. Oh, and I'm not just talking about the landscape, but the people and our very rich culture.

So if you want to see how beautiful Jamaica is, you have two choices - stay in the 'beautiful resort' and stare at the beautiful walls, or get out in to the country and experience the real Jamaica.
Use common sense of course, and open your eyes and see past the so called poverty that many other tourists can't seem to bypass. Sure, when it comes to money and material goods, not everyone in Jamaica is blessed, but we're rich in SO MANY other areas.

Peace!

Jamaica is far more beautiful than is said, what do you want to see There are breath taking views in the cockpit countries, the Blue Mountains, the green grotto caves, cascading water falls, the Y.S., Reach falls, there are mineral springs, warm water springs the blue lagoon.... The people, our culture our music our dances, what you want to see. don't just stay in a hotel, go tour Jamaica see for yourself.
Big up, Lisa M. One Love sista.

Oh yes! Its a beautiful country especially in the country and resort areas. People need to realize that Kingston is not all of Jamaica. Driving around in the country areas show me how good and great God is to create such a beautiful country with his hands. I drove through an area of St Mary in December and I have never seen such a beautiful scenery. Jamaicans dont know how bless they are until they migrate abroad into the cold ice box.

Secret
dont believe the hype... its all beautiful...
(and to the artist, there is beauty even in poverty) but im getting over myself... i know u mean commercial beauty so here you go see for yourself:-

my fave photos

http://www.brianrosen.com/
(compare archetecture, old house, scenery and nature) to understand why people say jamaica is not beautiful)

http://www.photographicartja.com/

http://www.lovelyjamaica.com/gallerie/
(click on each pic for an album of pics)

in addition look at some of these places in kingston which i suppose people would say is the worst of parish in terms of beauty

http://www.strawberryhillresort.com/gallery.htm
http://photos.igougo.com/pictures-photos-b95729-s2-p152338-Hope_Gardens.html

So i suppose it depends on how u look at it and what u consider beauty. I personally think that it all is! I mean i dont think i can go anywhere here and not be surprised by something

my faves

kingston - sunset at victoria pier or georgina, victorian archetecture or the busy market where time has collapsed and modern meets tradition

st andrew - the hills and mist on the blue mountain... peeny wallies in golden spring or old coffee mills

St mary - view of the hill falling off into the sea port antonio bay

Ochi Rios - breadfrut falls, a hidden lagoon and falls with a massive breadfruit tree growing out of the rock where the water cascades

St Elizabeth - view of pelican bar a hut in the sea of the narrow fishing boats being tugged by the tide in the bay

St thomas - white horses where the waves gallop in a white fray unto a blacksand beach and springs jut out into the streets from the side of the hills

Portland - bottomless blue lagoon and its houses like something from venice

Negril - the sea is the bluest and the greenness is just set against it. Negril is clusters of colourful little chatelle houses in huge grassy fields

Montego bay- Rose hall and other great houses, glistening rivers and caves

Buffbay - huge rivers streaming with red otahetie apples

... in fact i think it is more beautiful than it sounds!!

hope u like the pic... sorry if i sound like a tourist board ad!! but we jamaicans really cant help it!

stelise
Depends on where you are. Jamaica has its problems just like anywhere else in the world...

kelly
it all depends on where you are in jamaica. In ocho rios and negril are amazing. the resorts are great the beaches are so beautiful. ocho rios is one of the most popular tourist area. but it all depends on where in jamaica you are. but it is beautiful

To appreciate the beauty of Jamaica and Jamaicans you have to experience it yourself. People do an admirable job of describing the beauty but it cannot compare to personal experience

For sure! The country has immense natural beauty and the people are genuine. The vibe is so nice.

boo
Jamaica is way more beautiful than people make it sound... The resorts, the people, the food, and the music. It's just a great place.

Michael F
well the resorts are beautiful, but outside of that it is pretty desolate and impoverished. The dunns river falls are breathtaking and the resorts are beautiful. The beaches in Negril are nicer than ocho rios.
