Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States. You can put as much lipstick on that pig as you want, calling it a Commonwealth, an unincorporated territory, etc. The fact is that we do not have a say in whom becomes President of the United States, but we serve in the U. S. Armed forces. We have been citizens of the U.S. since 1917, but we do not have representation in Congress, except for a lone delegate in the House of Representatives that cannot vote on the floor. No Senators from Puerto Rico. That is the crux of the problem in Puerto Rico. The two main parties are the PNP (pro statehood) and PPD (pro colony, although the call it Commonwealth). Hopefully it will become a state soon.

It is a commonwealth of the United States. People born there are U.S. citizens and can freely travel to the mainland, however, if still residents of Puerto Rico, they neither pay income taxes nor vote in federal elections, nor do they have representation in Congress.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the US. It is not a state.

lingote
it's a commonwealth.

We are territory of the United States. Our main language is Spanish and English as secondary language. Our currency is US Dollar. Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with so many beautiful beaches. There is a lot of history and historic places to visit too.

Trish gets the most complete answer to the question of how can you be part of the USA but not a state..'cause there are these things called Commonwealths, Territories and dah dah dah The District of Columbia that aren't states but are as American as Delaware or Florida.......as she said, Hawaii and Alaska were Territories, not states up to 1959....

La Flaca
Puerto Rico is part of the USA, but its not a state, its a commonwealth. It's just like Hawaii used to be. Guam, Samoa, The Virgin Islands, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Petrel Islands, Seranilla Bank and Wake Island are ALL territories (including Puerto Rico) of the United States.
