Is the Dominican republic a good place to live?

I lived there 10 months and I think it is a wonderful place to live if you can rough it a little. It is hot and electricity goes out almost every day, so you suffer a little and food in the frig goes bad quickly, which you can avoid by purchasing an inverter or generator or both (not cheap). BUT it is beautiful, the people are friendly and the dancing is great. There are lots of great outdoors activities in the mountains or beach. Spanish is a must. You can deal with the crime by avoiding dangerous places, always calling a taxi rather than flagging one down, and traveling in groups late at night. Use common sense and you will have a wonderful life! Food is expensive at restaurants unless they are restaurants where locals eat and anything imported from US costs more than it would if you had purchased it here. No poisonous snakes! always a plus in a tropical place. Rent is inexpensive.

If you have money is the best place in the world ... honestly I would had not inmigrated to the US if I would have had money over there.
Most of the money is property of the corrupted politicians.

Dave
To the gentleman who said that there are more deaths in the Dominican Republic than in Iraq, I would have to ask,"Where the hell are you getting your information!' My family immigrated to the US from the Dominican Republic over 30 years ago and my entire family continues to have strong ties down there and I can honestly say to you that over 90% of every Dominican here in the US having the the same income they currently have here would move back in a heart beat! It a beautiful, friendly, and affordable place to live. Over the years I have taken friends down on vacation and they love it, to the point of investing and buying property on the island.

But I will admit one thing, you either need to have a good job lined up to have a business to really make the most of it. Most Dominicans come to the US to save money or establish a business back home and they leave as soon as they can.

If you are considering the Dominican Republic do no hesitate, real estate is fairly affordable right now but that is all changing. the DR has been a vacationing spot of Europeans for year now and Americans are slowly beginning to discover it, soon there will be a McDonald's on every corner, look at that they did to Puerto Rico.

It IS a good place to live. As others have said, there is crime, as there is in every major city. You will find that the cost of living is lower than in most other places.

Dominicans tend to be very kind towards foreigners, with very few exceptions.

It appears it can be. You can get a place for a reasonable amount of money. Provided you have your own business or a job which is in demand there (and you can speak Spanish), I'd say there is a future for you. While crime can be an issue, so can living in many other major cities or even some not so major cities in the US. Just be responsible and cautious. It also helps if you spend a short period there doing some no-so-touristy stuff and see if it's something you can handle. Good luck.

yes.it is a nice. place very cheap and confortable, people is kind.if you are rich evey part of the world is wonderfull.Believe me

Rox
No!!!!! There are right now 50 deaths per 100,000 people in that country. To put that in perspective there are only 30 per 100,000 in Iraq and there is a war going on there.
