Clairbe,
let me be honest, the The Common wealth of the Bahamas are link to the Caribbean only by its people, culture and history,Geographically on a map you will not see it la belled or located in the Caribbean sea its right off the east coast of Florida USA approx 50 miles closest, its and independent nation comprising some 700 islands combine with cays/islets you get well over 2500,which all lie in the Atlantic Ocean,Just like Bermuda and Turks and caicos they too are considered Caribbean, based on History, culture and people.
The reasons listed above [History, people, music, food and Culture] are reasons to which some persons think its in [washed or bounded by ] the Caribbean sea [region].

caribbean is the area with all the islands like the bahamas in it.

Geez... we really need to start teaching geography again in this country.

Sa_San
you got it backwards. bahamas is in the Caribbean.

Artman
Not the same thing.

Check the map; the caribbean islands are in the Caribbean Sea; the Bahamas are way up North of the Caribbeans.

No.... The Caribbean and the Bahamas are two areas that are actually next to each other.

The Bahamas are a group of over 700 small islands... In the North Atlantic Ocean (They are next to Florida.)

The Caribbean is a group of islands which are a part of the western Atlantic Ocean. The Caribbean is bordered by the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles along with Central America and the northern part of South America.

The Bahamas are not officially a part of the "Caribbean" because they do not touch the Caribbean Sea, however they are a part of the West Indies like a majority of the other islands are.

If you asked a Bahamian they tend to be very quick to point out that they are not in the Caribbean by the way... Much like the overseas British-citizens of the Turks and Caicos Islands (a.k.a. "Belongers") will tell you as well. And infact if you read the intro of the Constitution of the Bahamas you will notice theirs(and the one of Barbados') are different from the other former British colonies in region.... Both of these islands you'll notice do not actually touch the Caribbean Sea.... The Caribbean Sea in the case of Barbados terminates at the Windward Islands. Barbados is to the east of the Windward Islands... But anyway, the open line of both the Barbados and Bahamian constitution expressly spell out as geography location that they fall under the area government of the "Caribbean and North Atlantic Territories." (of Britain when they were being drafted.)

The Turks and Caicos and Bermuda aren't independent yet, as such they don't have a constitution with the same line but as far as I've seen Barbados and the Bahamas are the only ones which state "North Atlantic Territories" as part of their reference points and by coincident they both don't touch the Caribbean Sea either.

I'm a 15 year old kid from The Bahamas and we are not located in the Caribbean... Just like Joe stated, The Bahamas and furthermore the Bahamian people are linked to the Caribbean by the culure and history that they share, among other characteristics... (Pirate era, slavery, cultural aspects and regional closeness)...

"The Commonwealth of The Bahamas consists of 700 Islands and nearly 2,500 cays. About 30 of these islands are inhabited. The capital city of Nassau is located on New Providence Island. (where I'm from (Nassau) Close by is Paradise Island which is accessed by bridges from Nassau. The nation's second city, Freeport, is located in Grand Bahama Island; the city of Lucaya is also located on Grand Bahama. The other populated islands/cays are called the Family of Out Islands. The many islands and cays of The Bahamas stretch southeast off the Florida coast, the closest Island to the U.S. is Bimini, about 55 miles off the coast of Florida. The islands and cays sprawl across nearly 100,000 square miles of ocean, beginning at the northern point east of Palm Beach, Florida and spanning practically 750 miles to the southeast where they come inside 50 miles of Cuba and Haiti."
There are the facts from a national site...
THE BAHAMAS IS NOT IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA IT IS JUST NORTH OF IT... The caribbean refers to the islands that are located in the caribbean sea ( aka the region). the West Indies are located just north of the Caribbean and this is where you will find the Antilles, then divided into the Greater Antilles and then the Lesser Antilles and Finally the BAHAMAS... West indies not the Caribbean, I live here in the Capital of the Bahamas, Nassau , trust me I should know...

The Bahamas Islands are considered to be part of the Caribbean region. But is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida and the United States and northeast of Cuba.)

Erik Q
No the bahamas are in the carribean sea or a group of the caribbean islands. Kind of like New York is in the US but the US isn't in New York. Get it?
