Steve

Is the downtown area of Nassau, Bahamas safe?

We are going for our honeymoon in August, and I was wondering if it is a "safer" downtown area to walk from place to place or if we should take cabs everywhere.

Yes, downtown is really safe. Its where all the tourists go so the government make sure that that is a secure area. Taking a cab would be sending unnecessarily and you would be missing out on all the beautiful sights. Walking is good and safe so Enjoy your honeymoon.

Anywhere is safe as long as you dont make yourself a target.
dont wear an expensive camera or watch, things like that

common sense when visiting other places.

yes Bay.ST is very safe, the stores are all in one place, so you can walk store to store, also that is where the cruise ships dock. you could take a cab or the bus, the bahamian people are the kindest people I have met.

Hey you have noting to worry about. It is very safe and there are always people around especially in the day time. Police are seen as well. So have a great time and do not worry about a thing.

I was there several years ago also in August.
I felt very safe.

it is perfectly safe to walk around and the cabs are kinda expensive.
and dont mind that person about not wearing expensive watches or whatever, Bahamian people dont go around robbing tourists trust me it just doesnt happen like that

Yes, although there are complaints from tourists about the straw market sellers harassing them for a sale. I do see people walking downtown daytime and at night. But personally I would tell you to take a cab; it is nicer, and Bahamians can get pretty wild and foolish (i.e. cursing, J walking e.t.c.) and don't accidentally buck into them, they'll take that as a threat and can become violent. I've witnessed it many times.
