I haven't been to Riviera Maya - However I have been to Montego Bay. The water is clear as day, but only thing I didn't love is the bottom is rocky and is hard to walk on. - Hence lay on a raft!!! :)

The water is only rocky at some beaches and in very small sections. Montego Bay is awesome and the beaches are just totally wonderful. Never seen the Riviera Maya.
