Yes significant. For starters they do not speak Spanish in Dominica, but English. Dominica is largely rainforest whereas the DR is not. Dominica is in the Eastern Caribbean, and the DR shares the island of Hispinola with Haiti. The DR has many resorts for tourism. Dominica does not have those massive large resorts but smaller places and also gets a lot of cruise ship traffic.

They are two completely different countries.

They just both happen to sound similar and be in the carribbean.

If I was Dominican this question would really wind me up!!! Lol

This is like asking if there is a difference between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Dominica is in the Eastern Caribbean. There they speak English and a French Patois locally, and the island is much smaller with more forest cover and the only major population of Carib Indians that managed to survive colonialism. In fact, it is said that if Christopher Colombus came back, Dominica would be the only island he could still recognise. Their culture is mostly a mix of African, French, English, East Indian and Carib traditions.

The Dominican republic is the eastern part of Hispanola. Its the second largest country in the caribbean and is much larger than Dominica. Dominicans speak spanish and are mostly a mix of Spanish, African and some indian bloodlines.

Two seperate countries-Dominican Republic is larger with more resorts and shopping. It's not as isolated as Dominica, which is very small, much poorer. Dominica has more mountainous regions with rainforest climate-except near the coast. Other than the cruise port-there isn't much tourism.
When the cruise ships leave, the island basically closes.
