There is a place called Timbuktu in Mali but not yet in Jamaica. In Jamaica the name is used to describe ANY location that is considered to be extremely remote to a person, and what is remote to you might not be remote to me! For example someone living in Montego Bay could consider the hills in the Cockpit area to be Timbuktu as the area indeed remote, not easily accessible. The connotation however is meant to be negative, and is definitely associated with the motherland.
The only Timbuktu present in Jamaica now is a retreat venue at Johnson Hill in Hellshire, St Catherine. The location might have been remote when it was named but with the new highway it certainly cannot be considered remote now!
