Is traveling to CUBA dangerous for a US citizen and are there any penalties for going to CUBA???

Cuba is not a dangerous place for US citizens to visit. Many people visit Cuba from other countries now. Canadians, the English, Australians,Germans, etc. There is a very large number of tourists in Cuba at any given time. With the Embargo, it is NOT illegal to travel to Cuba, it is however, illegal to spend money in Cuba as a US citizen. Hence, making it pretty difficult to travel to Cuba. You can get visas through the US for research or other things. I am going this summer, but my husband has family on the island so we have permission for immediate family to go. I have left a link with all the visas you can get. It is difficult to get a visa from the US though. You can, however, travel through Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, etc and the customs officials in Cuba will not stamp your passport if asked not to. There is a tourist visa you must obtain in Cuba that can be obtained through the travel agent. Tourist Visa Card: $15

With the embargo that is in place and has been since July 1963 it is a violation of OFAC rules and regulations for a US citizen to travel to Cuba without the proper paperwork issued by the Treasury Department. It is also illegal for a US company to do business with a Cuban business. Going to Cuba for a vacation can cost you an extra $10,000 because that is what the penalty for violating the embargo is.

Cuba is not dangerous is a very safe place to visit unless you decide to walk at midnight in the worst neighborhood on Havana of course is not gonna be safe but the rest of the country is very tourist friendly. For USA citizens is illegal if you go without the treasure department permit ( they stipulate an amount of money that you are allow to spend there)but if you ask for this you can go without any problems. Also plan ahead your trip because it takes some time to get the permits.
I'm Cuban but I got my citizenship last year and I'm going at the end of February so that my mom could meet her granddaughter.

Cuba is much safer than Mexico. But I believe it illegal for US citizens to go there. Thats US illegal.

1. No
2. Yes - the US government will currently not let you back into the US if you have travelled to Cuba. Congress is looking at loosening up the travel embargo but Bush has promised to veto any changes.

Cuba is happy to have visitors, regardless of where they are from. There are some places you can go in the carribean that have boats that will take you to Cuba, and if you are american, they conveniently "forget" to stamp your passport.

If you get caught by the US, you can get in trouble. With the anti-terror hype, I imagine anything could happen, from fines to interrogation and imprisonment. Maybe you would even be "disappeared." Probably not, but you never know. Especially if you were ever involved in any liberal leaning protests.

The only legal way to get there is on some kind of research visa.
