JAMAICAN CREW: Who else is sick of Fake Jamaican accents in Movies(lol)?

It really doesn't bother me as much as it used to since I've learned to consider the source. The people who produce these films don't seem to take the time to audition Jamaican actors for these roles. They always use American actors to portray the same tired old cliches, people cursing or acting like simpletons. I think it's because they can't tell the difference between the Jamaican accent and some others and they don't recognize that Jamaicans are real people and not just girls dancing limbo on the beach or guys bopping like fools, smiling saying "yes mon."

As for the person who said he's tired of fake hair and strange colors, that is not limited to Jamaicans. I've seen the same thing among Trinis and Bajans as well as Americans. Besides, Jamaica has now become a bona fide brand, casting worldwide influence in terms of fashion, cuisine, music, the arts, athletics (some of the greatest runners in the world), education. All those Americans and other foreigners who have made a fortune selling clothing, jewellery, sandals, sneakers and other products with the Rasta colors should be thanking the genuine Jamaican/Rastafarians for that.

Recently, the first black man to solo around the world was 23 year old Barrington Irving from Jamaica. Jamaica may be just a little developing country but it has made a big impact on a lot of other countries. Have you heard of "Brand Jamaica?" I invite you to spend some time learning about the country. There's much more to it than the silly things you see in the movies.

Truthfully speaking it doesnt bother me as much anymore at we are getting exposure. How many Jamaican actors do you know and i mean not of Jamiacan decent. They certainly won't cast Oliver in a Hollywood production.

Even the rastaman who was an actor (his name escapes me now) did a psuedo patois albeit better than all non Jamaicans but none the less pseudo.

The Cool Runnings actors should have done better and every person working behind the scenes should have picked up on the inconsistency in their speech.

You have to keep in mind that 1. the language and accent have to be recognizable to the audience. 2 these actors go to a speech coach to learn the language and this would be what they are taught. 3. there is a stereptypical view of Jamaicans (particularly Jamaican males) and the accent/language. If it isnt broken English its a curse word or a "mon" at the end of every sentence and constant referrals to life back home or coconuts or weed

Other noted Jamaican charaters include Roscoe, Lynns BF from Ja. who came over in a small boat, the worker at Flavour on Living single who was in constant fear of immigration. Both are the Jamaican who reached the US illegally and either 2) have no job and are lazy or b) have a number of jon=bs and run a number of schemes.

The real bad thing about these movies is that they used American actors to portray a Jamaican reality, when local talent resources could have been tapped. Doug E. Doug?? Really now!!! I can see Christopher Daley [Johnny] shining in that role.

Ps....The best accents [and the most authentic "bombo-claats"] were in Marked for Death with Steven Segal.

spam ' GRUNT' HE IS FEISTY"!! any ways a nuh u alone really annoyed by it , mi did tink seh a me alone but a tru thing that is not how we jamaicans sound with patois, i guess you only trully have to be 100% jamaican to speak and understand the dialect, and only dumb ignorant people like grunt would say that jamaicans do not know how to speak proper english. it ReaLLy rEA llY anNoYs ME !! its extremely annoying. i thought the same thing. what the hell. whats ups mon. helll even if they said man it would have been alot better.

buts whats a lot crazier than the movies are the real life situations. i work in an hotel industry and you should hear black men trying to pick up tourist. its enough to make you scream.

I get annoyed with it at times too. If these actors are going to speak the jamaican patois, they should study how they talk, or even go to Jamaica just to get a sense of how they sound. Taye Diggs in Stella Got Her Groove Back, I wasn't feeling the accent at all. It annoyed me too, and I thought it was horrible, even though I think he is a good actor.

Ribbons of Blue is a movie I saw about 2-3 years ago, and I thought the guy who played a jamaican had the WORST jamaican accent I ever heard, but all in all it was a real good movie. He was a Lucian (from St. Lucia) playing a guy from Jamaica. You could hear his lucian accent very clear in the film. Back to the topic, Denzel Washington in the Mighty Quinn pulled it off alright with the accent. Sheryl Lee Ralph has a good accent too even though she has the background, and she born in the states.

But I does feel what you saying, with the people in the movies with the annoying accents.

Jah know, only Malik Yoba mi eva hear do a good Jamaican accent. And Lenny Henry. Basically people with Jamaican parents tend to be able to carry a decent accent. Most other people should just leave it alone.

Those movies are old news...anything new you want to complain about?
