Carry jamaican dollars for local purchases, like cigarettes and food. Having U.S. currency can help with some purchases such as large souvenirs (which are usually priced US$ anyway).

both currencies are accepted legally, but shop owners are not obligated to give you change in US$. The current exchange rate is $72 to US$1. If u are getting less than J68 for your dollar, take ur business to a different vendor.

I RECOMMEND YOU TAKE THE LEAST $2000US DOLLARS THEY USE AMERICAN CURRENCY THERE DONT WORRY ,AND BEEN THAT YOU WANT TO BUY STUFF I RECOMMEND THAT U GO SHOPPING LOCALLY OTHER THAN THE DUTY FREE SHOPPES
ALSO THE GOING RATE NOW IS $70 TO $1 US SO IF U GO SHOPPING DONT TAKE THE XRATE FOR LESS THAN $65 JAMAICAN THE LOCALS CANT PAY OUT $70 AS THE BANKS DONT SO ITS BEST IF YOU BUY XRATE AT WESTERN UNION WHEN YOU GET HERE AND REMEMBER THAT THEY DONT GIVE CHANGE IN US DOLLARS

Take Jamaican money. If you rely on shopkeepers or stores to take your US$ they'll give you an exchange rate that is profitable to them, regardless of what the prevailing exchange rate on the market is. You will also get trouble when it comes to lower denomination US$ bills, since some banks will not exchange single dollars for Jamaican currency if the shopkeeper takes them there.

We just came back from 2 weeks in Jamaica. We took USD and that currency was accepted everywhere. I think I saw a Jamaican bill once. If you pay in USD, you get your change in USD.
We spent around a thousand dollars, on tours, shopping etc.

US dollars are actually very good to bring when going to Jamaica since it's worth way more than it is in America. Bring US dollars to Jamaica and they'll gladly change it into jamaican dollars if you want or you can just spend your US dollars without changing it into jamaican dollars.

US money is accepted everywhere on the island, but by law, change must be given in Jamaican Dollars. That is why you should not take any large bills with you but plenty of small ones. Most resorts offer the items you mentioned, however, they will be more expensive at the resort and variety will be limited. Take what you think you will need with you. Excursions are extra so plan for that. $75 US is a common fee for them. Also, even though your resort has a "no tipping" policy, most visitors do tip for service. One Dollar bills are perfect for this and plan for a much as $100 for tipping. You might want to do some shopping off the resort property and plan on some money for that as well. In addition, you might want to buy some gifts for friends and family back home. The airport is the best place for this and you can do it on the way back. They have duty free shopping there and you can buy some Jamaican rum, Blue Mountain Coffee, etc for gifts. Plan your trip well and have a great time!

US dollars are always good. if you have a credit card is good too. depends on how long you are staying. i would take $500, and charge everything i can. theres also banks there that you can withdraw from ur account too.

In theory the Jamaican dollar must be used in all transactions. However almost nobody follows that rule and the US dollar is widely accepted.

U.S. dollars certainly. The Jamaican dollars is like monopoly money with no real value outside much less inside the country. Where the heck would you find a bank to sell you Jamaican dollars anyway??!!

Cash, credit cards & travellers cheques will work just fine for you. Have fun.

take monopoly money, that way when your taking in the carribean air and some one sticks a 45 behind your ear to turn out your pockets, you wont lose a cent!
