The Colours of the Jamaican flag are:
Green - for the land
Gold - for the sunshine and
Black - for the hardships we faced

The red, yellow and green colurs are used by Rastafarians, they are the colours in the flag of Ethiopia which they view as the motherland (even though slaves were taken fron West Africa). Since Rastafariansm originated in Jamaica the colours do tend to get a bit confusing to those who are not Jamaicans and don't know about our culture.

bashmentgyal
They are the colors of the Ethiopian flag (red, green, yellow) and are now popularly identified with Rastafarian.

red - blood shed
yellow - the gold (the richness of the people)
green - lush lands of africa (ethiopia)
.....and red always goes on de top because blood flows down.

Jamaica's colors are yellow, green and black...NO red!!!

It is really Red Gold and Green which signifies the colours of the flag from Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world that has no history of colonization. Upon their independence, many African countries adopted the colors of the Ethiopian flag - green, yellow and red - that became known as the Pan-African colors.

The official flag of Ethiopia consists of three equal and horizontal bands of green (top), yellow, and red with a yellow pentagram and single yellow rays emanating from the angles between the points on a light blue disk centered on the three bands.

this is the rastafarian flag. please note that it is not the jamaican flag.
red - blood shed
yellow - the gold which means the richness of the people
green - lush lands of africa (ethiopia) and the jamaican island
.....and red means blood of the blacks that was said to be shed by de whites.

The red, green, yellow and sometiimes black I would say is more of a rasta thing. When I was in Jamaica I use to just say rasta colors but yea I think it is like a reggae thing.
