Jamaica? We are thinking about going to Jamaica, and would rather not stay in an all inclusive resort?

My hubby has to go there to work, for 6 weeks, and I would like to go for a few day while he is there, but I am not a resort kind of girl. I much prefer off the beaten path type places. I know about the high crime rate ect., but I still like to explore the local flavor. Any suggestions of places to stay that are not really hoity toity?

It depends on where in Jamaica your husband has to be. I've been spending time on the SW coast when I've gone down lately (around the Black River and Treasure Beach area). There are VERY few tourists, and hanging out with the locals is such a wonderful, fun time. There are many villas/houses available for rent in the area, and you can generally get a house with a cook, housekeeper and driver for less than you would pay at a normal, non all inclusive hotel. You won't find friendlier people anywhere on earth. Check out www.treasurebeach.net - there is a ton of info on the area. We stay at Button Bay (a house with a private beach and pool) and their website is www.buttonbayjamaica.com. Pricing info is right online. We'll be there over New Years. :)

There is crime in the big cities, much as there is crime in New York, Chicago, or any other big city. Stay away from the really touristy areas (like the ports when there is a ship in) and you'll be just fine: you just need to use common sense like you would in any other touristy area.

I went to Jamaica with my family two years ago and we stayed at Beaches Boscobel. I loved it, but since you're not looking for something really hoity toity that should be really easy for you to find. A lot of the hotels in Jamaica are anything but spectacular. We had to take a two hour bus ride to get to our hotel and we dropped off a couple of families at other hotels on the way. One of them was really cute and the families stayed in hut type things. I wish I could remember the name... but I'm pretty sure it was in Ocho Rios.

Stay at the Port Pit in Montego Bay. Not exactly off the beaten path, but a nice and cheap, family-owned & operated place.

I would not venture into Kingston if I were you.

we are going to White Sands in Negril, inexpensive with no television in the rooms on the beach. Go to Expedia.com.

Well you did mention your basic idea of the type of place you'd like to stay at. But some basic questions come to mind in light of what you have already stated(I am Owner of a Travel Agency):

1-A few days meaning? Proposed date of departure/return?
2-Do you have a Travel budget in place?
3- Any particular location in Jamaica?(off the beaten path can be anywhere in Jamaica)

Very minor details for sure but at the same time important as they will be a factor in where you eventually stay while in Jamaica. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your criteria, we can see what's available according to what you're looking for.
