Jamaica relations or treatment of Chinese ?

In the 1960's many Chinese / descendents were harassed, driven out. So how are things now, if a Chinese person visits for vacation in Jamaica ?

Theres no problem. Jamaica is a mix of many races the motto reflects that to a tee. Chinese persons are welcomed and play an integral part of our society. They are the shop keepers (as well as play a host of other roles- politicians, clergymen, teachers, doctors, musicians etc) from the board corner shop up the top of the road to the MEGA supermarket chains like Superplus.

This is an practice which stems from the post apprenticeship times wen the Hakka Chinese (early pioneers from which the majority of the Chinese persons in Jamaica descended from; others groups/clans migrated in lesser numbers) used their savings earned in the program to build shops. These people and other migrants would later go on to be business persons and entrepreneurs. Present day influential person of Chinese descent are Lascelles Chin and Micheal Lee Chin

Chinese persons migrate to Jamaica in droves often finding work at the freezone (garment and manufacturing district), adapt well to the society and even find a Jamaican spouse. Asians in general enjoy visiting the island because reggae and dancehall music is such a big draw for them. A few years ago the Jamaican dancehall queen was Japanese.

The culture and customs of these people are intertwined in Jamaica's from lottery games such as "drop pan" to the food. A number of Chinese food restaurants are run by black persons.

Jamaica is NOT a racist country for the most part. What we tend to have in Jamaica is classism and to a lesser extent skin colour prejudice. Jamaicans are very tolerant for example Chinese persons respond to name like Ms Chin and Mr. Lee when their last names could be far from such.

I will note that any Asian person will be referred to as Chinese as the wider population doesn't distinguish between Koreans Japanese Chinese etc. Though potentially offensive it is not meant as such.

There are so many Chinese nationals now living in Jamaica it is unbelieveable. The chinese have set up businesses in our country and they are doing very well. If it is you desire to visit the island then feel free to do without reservations.

Jamaica is a great place for vacation, don't listen to pple who never been there. If you are a tourist you are spending money and nobody cares of how you look, where you come from. Chinese community plays significant role in Jamaica's business life. Popular singer Tami Chynn has chinese roots. I'm not sure about chinese, but a lot of japanese tourists visit Jamaica for sure. Personally i went to a street dance in Kingston's ghetto area Tivoli Gardens and saw alot of japanese tourists there (probably i was the only white person there in the mean time).

There are loads of chinese peopel in jamaica. LOADS. We love the chinese!! The have lots of businesses there. U will not feel out of place. You can visit the chinese benovolence centre. There are lots of Japanese as well. They really love the Jamaican dancehall scence. The only thing is that Jamaican call all 'chinese looking' persons Mr or Miss Chin which is anoying for some of them but we are just having fun. Dont listen to all the bad publicity Jamaica gets. Jamaican LOVES tourists, we just want to show u a good time. All u people who DO NOT to visit Jamaica, DO NOT we dont want u there, but dont dissuade someone else from having their own experience.

We visited Ochos Rios in October with our Chinese daughter and had no issues. Everyone was happy to try to sell her stuff!

in Jamaica the Chinese aren't treated anyway they party with us they own several business, here and to my knowledge they love it here. however from my point of the majority of Chinese tend to stay to themselves instead of associating themselves.

Please do not listen to any nasty and negative rumours. Jamaica is not unsafe at all and they are in no way racist. There are many Chinese nationals living here and I have never seen any problem of racial conflict. They are quite comfortable. Our motto is 'Out of Many: One People'. We are a country with a grand mixture of all races: Black, White, Indian, Asian and everyone gets along perfectly fine.

Jamaica is a beautiful country with equally beautiful people. If you visit you will see that for yourself. Trust me you will not regret it.

Chinese ppl run all the supermarkets in Jamdown, I see them out and about but not really mixing with people they stay inside theirshops. The closest I really got to any was at school. But seriously on road you will be most likely to find "coolies" ppl who are Indian/mixed and Chinese/mix get reffered to as coolie too sumtimes. Chinese get called "chiney" too or Mr Chin. All races are ok visiting Jamaica no one will trouble you but the men will look you.

Jamaica has had a bad rap for many reasons. I have heard many rumors about the crime rate. Although I have not been I might try to stay at one of the resorts. It provides safe sense of security.

I Care, So I Share....
Jamaica is NOT the best place to vacation...pick somewhere else honey.

Jamaica is one of the most dangerous places in the world, besides racism, there are drug crazed gungangs running rampant there, please consider somewhere more peaceful, it is not necessary to willfully place yourself in danger.
