Jamaican, American, Or Jamarican? |
Ok I have a friend who is puzzled about his culture. Both his parents were born and raised in Jamaica but he was born here. I told him that he is Jamarican but he feels diff. What do you think? Additional Details Trollkepr...... He looks in the mirror everyday and I think he knows he's Asian BY RACE. He is confused because he can't relate to other Asians who's parents were born in Asia because his were born in Jamaica. As far as I know America will always be this way because people have their own cultural identities. |

All those answers are true. He has both USA an Jamaican citizenship.
If he is aware of his Jamaican culture, then he could reasonably consider himself a 'Jamerican'. There is no legal definition of this though. Its just an informal term to define people who culturally recognize both american and jamaican roots. |

I was born in Jamaica, from English parents, but was raised in England. So, although I feel English, the core of me, is Jamaican and I long to return, someday. I suppose the answer is, that we feel we need to have a connection to our roots, to know where we come from, so if he thinks he is a Jamaican, because of his parentage, then so be it. Indeed under Jamaican immigration laws he is entitled to a Jamaican passport. |

Both my parents are were born in Jamaica and I was born in the U.S. and I consider my-self to be Jamarican!
If your friend feels that he is more American then his Jamaican culture then he is American!
he is American but his culture will always be Jamaican |

Well my parents are from Jamaica and I was born here in the US. I move to Jamaica when I was 4 and return to the US at age 10, but I consider myself a Jamaican and an American. Also I have a Jamaican and an American passport so I am a dual citizen. |

You are right! He is a Jamerican..which is a word invented for that.
He really is American, with Jamaican parents. |

your friend is Jamaican by naturalization only because his father is Jamaican but American by birth. This makes him technically American |

He is an american citizen he can obtain Jamaican citizenship through his parent if they are not naturalize american citizen. You must do your home work before to open your mouth, any country where you were born regardless of your ax cent you are a citizen of that country. |

He is not Jamaican or Jamaican-American. Jamaican is not a race it is a country. My parents are from Norway. That does not make me Norwegian or Norwegian-American. It makes me an American and if I really had to add something else, I could say "of Norwegian heritage" All Americans are from somewhere else, Even Native Americans started somewhere else. We are all Americans and if we get back to the old days of looking at ourselves as a melting pot the better we all will be.

FYI American can refer to North America, South America, or Central America. To be technical, just American would be correct, but it just comes down to what culture he is more familiar with. I was born in Korea but consider myself more of an American (or person of the United States) |

Its like Sean Kingston....He has never been to Jamaica before his concert in Ochi last christmas...even though he has Jamaican parent, he has no clue as to what life is like in JA, so he's an American. If he ever spent a few years in JA, maybe he would be a Jamerican.
Its like blacks in the US calling themselves African Americans, yet they never stepped foot in Africa & can't tell you where in Africa they came from ! A true African American is someone who lived THERE and came to the US immigrating. I've never ONE TIME heard a Jamaican say " I'm an African Jamaican " |
