Life in Puerto Rico?

I'm interesting in going to live in Puerto Rico but am not sure of the economy and lifestyle of the people there. I'm thinking of opening a business there and also improve my Spanish.I'm originally from Jamaica, what are the do's and don'ts there, cost of living (info online seems misleading)....? i've been a couple times and love the place. any recommendations?

We moved to PR from the States about 5 years ago.
There are people with every lifestyle here- the very poor to the very rich.

From what I can see, the average (not professional) person makes about $8/hr. This does not go too far, so most families have multiple people working.
Electricity is expensive and water too.
Food costs about the same as in the States, maybe a little more for some things.

You can live cheaper if you stay further from the city. You can find houses to rent for about $600 month in the countryside. But if you want to stay close to the city, you can pay in the $1000's .

To open a business, you need to registrar it and collect IVU tax. Of course, many cash business happens under the table.

Good luck!

Well, Im from the Dominican Republic, the neighbor country, and what I suggest you do is go live for a couple of months or maybe a year to trully see what if feels to live there.

I wouldn't suggest you open a business yet until you've lived there and do research to see if your business will succeed. Like I said, you should live there for about a year, long enough to improve your spanish. If you like it and think you will succeed with your business, then Buen Viaje!, but if you dont like it, try visiting Dominican Republic! ;)

Good luck

Restaurant biz do good here, i suggest you open a jamaican rest. there are many west indians form the lesser antilles in rio piedras, so you can open one there to cater to them.

also, you may get lots of biz in the tourist areas feeding the hungry tourists, specially from the ones from the cruise ships.

cost of living is the same as in the states. wages are lower, but if you own you're own biz, you're good to go, since you wont be getting paid per hour, but by the profit you make.

i agree with coquishi.
i live in the countryside and i only pay 20 bucks for electricity and 15 for water, but if u live in the city its way more expensive than the country.

if u are going to open a business,i recommend u open one in the city and food its the #1 business that leaves money here, also fine pubs, jewelry and accessories stores(purse, shoes, sun glasses, ect.)

I live here and I can say, you should really come and get the feel of it, its really stable, it all depends on what type of bussiness you want to open and where...
