Looking for suggestions on what to do with a 7 hour overnight layover in San Juan?

I know the airport has a hotel, but the prices are very high. Is the airport open all night? Is there any place to rest in or near it that would be open and safe?

It depends on what you want to do. First, there is nothing to do at the airport, there will be personnel but not many. If you want to sleep I would stay at the airport hotel because a taxi from the airport to any hotel round trip can add up to $50. In the other hand you will be very close to El San Juan Hotel which has a gorgeous lobby, casino, and club; taxi ride should be about $12. But, if it is Monday-Wednesday it may not be as alive. But it is beautiful. If you want to visit Old San Juan the taxi ride will be about $25 and if it is too late it may not be too safe. But if you have some extra cash a taxi tour would be worth it. Hope it helps, visit www.gotopuertorico.com click on interactive map to find accommodations, it is very helpful.

Well overnight its hard here, You can take a cab and paly casino, have a few drinks, but know theres nothing in the week open thats the new law.Its called codigo de ordenenza municipal, some areas bars can open until 1am or 2am others until 12am. Hotels are different, they have the bars open all night and casino too. If you stay at the airport, well its boring, everything its close. Cab from airport to hotels can cost from $15 to $25. Enjoy!!BTW The water its ok

The airport hotel can help you out for a few hours and I don't think it's that expensive. It's a Best Western flag, so you can check out specific rates on the web. Cab rides are expensive, but you can take a short one to the Isla Verde area where there are cool hotels. Best bet: Hotel San Juan. 2nd Best bet: Ritz Carlton San Juan. Both have casinos and a lot of night life. Also available is Hotel Intercontinental (with casino), Embassy Suites San Juan (with casino). ES is the least expensive one.

All of this depends also on the day of the week you are doing this. If it's a Sunday or Monday, expect everything to be very toned down. If it's a Thursday or Friday, expect traffic jam in Isla Verde Avenue until late (err, early in the morning). Cabs from hotels to airport are easy to find.

The water here is fine, by the way.

If you're planning to stay up all nite..Stay near the airport...Isla Verde has Lots of stuff to do..and you can stay at The Green isle Hotel not a Fancy 5 star one but safe and clean..also next Denny's in Isla verde ..there's another guest house the name is Mario's is like 69.00 a night and is next to everything especially the San Juan Hotel and Casino... all the stores in Isla Verde are open 24 hours..

Isla Verde is 5 minutes from the Airport and the Taxis have a Flat rate to take you there.

The comment about the water is False ..Puerto Rico has the same standars for the water as any other State.

Enjoy..

The water is fine in Puerto Rico (better than here in the USA). You can take a cab from the airport to virtually any of the hotels in Old San Juan, Carolina or Isla Verde and be there within a few minutes. I would suggest doing this rather than hanging out at the airport. I don't know if it's open all night, but San Juan has such great hotels and great nightlife that it would be better worth your while to get out of the airport and see some of the local attractions.

I know, I know!!!!
