I'm a Trinidadian living in Canada. I've never been to Matelot though. There is NO State of Emergency in Trinidad...I was just there for 3 weeks. Crime is mostly centered around drugs & gangs in the Laventille area. Every US & Cdn city has it's crime riddled areas, so it's all about being aware, alert & practical. There are other sites worth visiting also- Ft. George, Bird Sanctuary, Blue Basin Waterfalls, Pitch Lake. It's normal for parents to be worried when someone leaves the nest alone, but these days, even staying at home presents a risk. Go. Experience. Enjoy.

STATE OF EMERGENCY!?!?!? Where did that come from??
While we do have a crime problem it is not unique to Trinidad and Tobago. I'm sure where you're from there is also crime. Matelot is way up in the countryside and apart from the annual turtle watching, theres's nothing much happening up there. It is peaceful, a beautiful scenery awaits you and the few beaches along the way are worth the drive. Why aren't you going anywhere near Port-of-Spain???
It is a city filled with people who would be happy to show you that T&T is diverse and has a lot to offer. Food, culture, music, fresh coconut water, nightlife and interest, just to name a few. I hope you get a chance to experience T&T.

Matelot is a beautiful quiet scenery in the North East of Trinidad. It is very safe and this really shows in all their country traditions. Trinidad is not in a state of emergency and as far as I can see it is safer than some and as safe as others. We are beautiful people a twin island nation with even more beautiful culture so enjoy Trinidad.

Yep, its safe up there, and beautiful too!
There is no pending state of emergency. A little while ago, the government considered a "limited" state of emergency, but then realised that there was no need for one.
There is crime in Trinidad, just like everywhere else, but the country is safe to travel to.
I hope your parents let you go, because you will have a GREAT time.
Enjoy your visit!!! ☺

Matelot is one of those quaint little villages, where everyone knows each other. Crabs walk in your front yard (the best kind to curry)!! I visited there and absolutely loved it . It is far away from everything but well worth the drive. When you go there ask for 'Fess' or 'Lester'

Serious, Matelot is a nice place.

**AccessDenied**
Matelot is one of d best places in trinidad as far as I'm concerned...It is a far drive but worth the trip! Trinidad is not goin to be declaring any state of emergency as far as I know.... I work in POS so I have to come up here everrrrrry day.

As long as you stay alert, walk with as little jewelery and hold on to your bags nothing will happen to you.
