I miss the mixing and drinking of (lemonade) sugar and water, in those days, it was mixed in a metal container and yu use dark sugar.
I miss Asham, grater cake, coconut cake, gizzada, busta, jackass corn. sweetie mek from sugar and peppermint.
At primary school, i use to buy 'red red', some grated coconut concoction (it wasnt hard like grater cake). I remember also buying oylie (oilie) some peanut mixup with oil on it. Larks all mi talking about a food.
I remember the days of walking barefooted in the rain and playing float (using matches stick to have a race).
I remember the days of making cars, truck and/or trailer by cutting the juice boxes and use the bottle stopper (caps) as wheels.
I remember the days of cooking one big black pot full of food, for the entire neighborhood. The pot was rubbed with mud so that they could wash off easy after cooking on the wood fire.
I remember the days of sleeping with your window and door open. I remember the days that you know your neighbours and use to sit and chat with them (face to face) not over internet.
oonu remember them days, or mi a go too far back, DWL
henyways (anyways), mi a chat too much so mi gone. |

I actually found a few Oliver tapes here in the US. My favorite memories were having fresh sugar cane cut and eating it. Days of listening the Louise Bennett stories at my aunt's house. |

I also liked and still like Independence Celebrations. Even prefer it over Christmas Celebrations.
I miss the outside kitchen with the wood fire and the "Kreng Kreng".
Just yesterday I had a Tastee chicken patty that somebody brought back from JA.. and it made me very happy. I also got HTB Bun and Jackass Corn. Was very happy indeed.

Nowadays, I can find many of the foods right here in the states but I miss sitting on the verandah, listening to the old people telling "Big Bwoy," "rolling calf" and "duppy" stories at night. I miss going to the river to skinny dip and to wade in the water to catch janga. I miss watching the "big women" cooking out in the yard in those big zinc pans. Boy, the food was so "sweet," I can still taste it. Most of all, I miss the way those remarkable older women loved, cared and protected me, along with all the other children who were not even theirs. |
