Montego Bay--unique and fun stuff to do? |
Hi-I just found out that I'm going to Montego Bay in a few weeks for my birthday!! We will be 4 ladies, age 30 and experienced travelers. We're staying in a private rented house and need to plan our own activities. Besides the beach, is there anything interesting you can advise me on? We like shopping, outdoor activities, nice restaurants and seeing some real native culture. But, we need to keep the spending kind of moderate.
This is my first trip to Jamaica, and I want others' opinons on how to spend my 5 days.
Thanks so much :) |

If you and your friends would like to venture outside of Montego Bay, I'd strongly recommend OUTAMENI in Ocho Rios, which offers a historical look at Jamaica in drama.
There's also a bird sanctuary in Anchovy (about 15 minutes from Montego Bay) called ROCKLAND. There, you can come up close and personal with a number of our beautiful birds including our national bird, the swallow tail humming bird.
BLACK RIVER SAFARI in St. Elizabeth is another lovely nature tour. You can see and possibly feed alligators and other wildlife while cruising on a boat through one of our most beautiful rivers.
On the Hip Strip, there's a lovely restaurant called MOBAY PROPER. They serve very delicious steamed fish.
There's also the very popular PORK PIT. They serve amaazing jerk pork and chicken at reasonable prices in a very casual atmosphere.
For shopping, our craft markets are OK, but I think you'll find more unique items being sold by individuals along the road to Ocho Rios or Black River. I find the craft items products to be primarily mass produced and boring. If you don't get a chance to leave Montego Bay then take your time going through the various shops and you might find a few choice pieces of carvings, paintings or jewellery.

Enjoy your birthday and trip!! |

I am jamaican, I live overseas though but I went back to visit two months ago and I had a blast. If you dont do anything else make sure to go to Dunns River Falls in Ochio Rios, you must be sure to climb the falls and explore the beach, it is a lot of fun. Enjoy your bday and your trip to the land of wood and water. Welcome to jamaica. |

I have one simple recommendation:
If you are in the shopping district, look for a taxi driver named Cecil. He drives for Maxi Tours and has a blue van with the words "never Give Up" across the front windshield.
He is a great guy who will treat you right and take you where YOU want to go, not where he thinks you should go!
We were lucky to find him and he took us all over the area: to the beaches, to Margaritaville, a lookout point over the bay and we had a blast!!!
I know it's like finding a needle in a haystack, but keep your eyes open for him. He wears a red hat.
Trust me, he is a great tour guide and you will have tons of fun running around the area with him!! |

We are all screwed

Take the trip to Dunns river falls. It is about 3 hours away and awesome |

MAke sure and hit the Craft MArket down by "Margaritaville". Don't EVER pay the price they ask, learn to bargain! I spent $15 on a mahogany walking cane that people have offered to pay more than $50 here for. I came back with a new suitcase full of clothes for less than $200. My hubby and I took a boat that has an underwater viewing cabin for $40 each. It was1 1/2 hours and we had loads of fun. Margaritaville has a giant trampoline and 40 foot slid einto the ocean that's the best price of all.... FREE. have fun and happy birthday. |
